Hard to find title, excellent info

This is chocked full of wonderful information that is still relevant all of these years later. It is easy to read, not like your average text or subject book that bores you to death. I highly recommend this for anyone interested in mining or in geology 101. The pages have been scanned and some are hard to read but not impossible and it doesn't deter from the subject at all. I give this an A+. So far, on my quest to be more knowledgeable about mining and the earth's crust and what in the world these rocks I love are made of and mean....I am much more smarter for having read this old book than anything else out there other than Geology for DUMMIES!

Character Versus Nation

"The Poetry Of Architecture", written by John Ruskin, a book written first for the common people, the farmer, fisherman, hunter, and shepherd; later for the middle class, rich, and nobility. When he decribes the cottages of working people he refers to utilitarian structures that relate significantly to the landscape, climate, and occupation of the inhabitants. National characteristics are taken into considerations as to the function of the structures.

His discussion of the landscape and how it contributes to the cottages is very relevant to Site Specific Sculpture and Architecture today.

The cottages in England are quite different from the ones in the other European countries. With the English cottages upkeep being very neat with perfect flowers, and the French people added more elaboration to their cottages. The Italian cottages being more sad in construction.

He describes the construction materials used in the cottages as being dependent on the natural resouces.

The is a very helpful book and lend itself to Site Specific Sculpture and Public Art.

John Ruskin also gives some of the qualities inherent in artists and their need to avoid ornamentation and work not at a national level, but answer to a higher calling.

Interesting Thoughts

This collection of papers by John Ruskin was first published in 1838.

Although the free copy I downloaded from Amazon’s kindle shop came without illustrations, I was able to picture quite well most of what the author so vividly describes. Apart from being vivid, at times his descriptions are also amusing; for instance when he says that

“…nothing can be more absurd than the humor prevailing at the present day among many of our peaceable old gentlemen, who never smelt powder in their lives, to eat their morning muffin in a savage-looking round tower, and admit quiet old ladies to a tea-party under the range of twenty-six cannon, which—it is lucky for the china—are all wooden ones,—as they are, in all probability, accurately and awfully pointed into the drawing-room windows.”

The book is split in two major parts, one about The Cottage and the other about The Villa. Cottages and villas in different countries are examined, and Ruskin explains in detail why certain ways of composing a building will look perfectly harmonious in one country or one situation, but won’t work at all anywhere else. He tells the reader at length about what blue, green and brown country means, and what sort of building will look and feel right in each. He severely warns against trying to imitate a different country’s style as well as against using too much or badly executed decorative elements. Some of his reasoning may appear curious to a 21st century reader, but keeping in mind the times when these papers were compiled makes for an interesting glimpse into the way people of intellectual rank (and with a certain standing in society) were thinking.

According to wikipedia, Ruskin (1819 – 1900) was the leading English art critic of the Victorian era. He is called “hugely influential in the latter half of the 19th century”. Admittedly, I’d not heard of him until reading this book, but he appears to have been a multi-faceted and –talented person whose many other works may well be worth reading. His personal life, as described there, sounds rather sad and strange. I do not want to go into any detail here, but if you want to know more, you will easily find out for yourselves.

I don’t say this book would work as an architect’s handbook of today. But it certainly was worth reading, even though some sentences were so long that they nearly covered an entire “page” on my kindle, and it satisfied my recurring want for non-fiction reads.

While I absolutely love most of Ruskin's writings, I found this book to ramble, and not have many new insights. The subject matter was also of less interest to me than that of his other books.

FOLDING FOR FUN

Origami Zoo is aimed at children, but kids at heart will have just as much fun folding these 25 cute critters ranging from "very simple" to advanced. Not all are typical zoo residents. Along with the more familiar hamster, pig, cow, puppy and butterfly come a penguin, a koala and even an errant monster. A Good Collection of Starter Designs

This is more of a beginner book although the title does not really imply that. There are 25 designs of which 18 are simple, 5 intermediate and 2 advanced. Personally, I would have liked to see more intermediate and advanced creations in the book considering this was a collaboration of two people. The illustrations are very good and the step-by-step instructions are easy to follow. The book comes with an envelope of colored origami paper attached to the inside back cover. One of the other gripes I have is that the color selection of paper that comes with the book is limited. For example, the Penguin design states to use paper with Black on one side, and Pig calls for Pink paper. Sadly, neither of these colors are included with the paper supply.

My daughter and I have made many of the designs. She likes the Butterfly and Cat the best. The Giraffe which looks impressive on the front cover is not a very good design as it is difficult to make it stand on its own. We've tried making it several times being very careful with the folds, but still not easy to make a stand-up version. I like the Pig design as it uses a single piece of paper unlike designs from other books which use multiple pieces (but you'll still have to find some pink paper). The Fox is a neat design as well.

Overall, it is a good book targeted more at beginners. You'll probably find yourself wanting to buy a more advanced book soon after getting this one.

Good Read.

This was a good read. The research done on "war dog" behavior and interaction with a trainer (Ranger) is well-represented. Dog lovers will appreciate the special relationship and dynamic between Tucker and Kane as well as the insertion of the occasional thought process in Kane's mind. It's a bit anthropomorphic, but it strengthens the reader's connection with Kane. The plot explores some potential outcomes in our modern, digital world regarding possible warfare and digital infiltration using drones combined with advanced software technology. Scary, as it's not too far "out there".

Another enjoyable book of the bond of a special forces commando and his remarkable dog.

This is the second of the "Tucker Wayne/Kane" series, where the relationship between a former Special Forces commando and his dog are the central characters. I loved the first book, but this book may have gone a bit too far in terms of trying to "rope in" other characters. You do learn more about the capabilities of dogs in military/police situations, which I find amazing.

The central premise is how a power hungry CEO is using advanced drone technology to try to spark a war to provide access to valuable minerals to feed his corporate empire. Wayne and Kane are central to stopping this conspiracy, but they are also oddly left aside at times, as two "geeks" are crucial to sabotaging the drones. The geeks are charmingly eccentric, and thus likable enough, but Wayne and Kane should always be the central characters of the book, not being relegated to mere "muscle" in support of the geeks. Thus, this book gets only four stars from me, not the five stars I gave the first book.

An Action Novel, A Buddy Story and A Warning

First of all, I am prejudiced because I have enjoyed all of James Rollins books. When Rollins first wrote Bloodline, about Tucker, an Ex-Ranger and his Canine, it really got my attention.

Reading stories about Men and Women in jeopardy is one thing, reading about a Dog, especially from the dog's point-of-view is something altogether different.

As a dog owner and lover, I honestly felt emotional as Kane, the hero dog gets put in tight situations to save his human pal. Perhaps it is me, but putting a loyal dog in danger affects me far more than contrived human exploits.

The story, is all too plausible and shows where the world may be going if Patriots do not step forward.

The book, moves right along. It read quickly and I wish there was more but I will have to wait for Rollin's next novel featuring Tucker and Kane.

In my view, the applications are the strength of the text and the reasons why I use this particular text. The students like them too and often comment on them in class.

My overall opinion of the text is that is does a good job of addressing the concepts that I would like to see in an intermediate level text. I primarily like the way the text begins with a discussion of what economic models are, and then flows into the various models from there.

My overall impression is that Nicholson is the best text in the field. There are two themes in Nicholson. First, the text is a study of how economists study markets and, second, the text uses many applications to show the usefulness of the theory. He gets to the essential theory without elegant mathematical models. All of this is in keeping with my approach to the course.

About the Author
Walter Nicholson is the Ward H. Patton Emeritus Professor of Economics at Amherst College and a visiting professor at Ave Maria University, Naples, Florida. Over his teaching career, Professor Nicholson has sought to develop in students an appreciation for the value of economic models in the study of important social questions. He also has enjoyed showing students some of the stranger things that economists have sought to model. Nicholson received his PhD in economics from MIT. Most of his research is in the area of labor economics, especially policy questions related to unemployment.

Very good detailed textbook

For a textbook, this one was very well organized and had an easy flow in reading. Best economics related book I have read. It did, though, have some minor spelling and grammar mistakes though.
