Elena Vanishing: A Memoir, by Elena Dunkle, Clare B. Dunkle

As heard on NPR's Diane Rehm Show!
Seventeen-year-old Elena is vanishing. Every day means renewed determination, so every day means fewer calories. This is the story of a girl whose armor against anxiety becomes artillery against herself as she battles on both sides of a lose-lose war in a struggle with anorexia. Told entirely from Elena's perspective over a five-year period and cowritten with her mother, award-winning author Clare B. Dunkle, Elena's memoir is a fascinating and intimate look at a deadly disease, and a must read for anyone who knows someone suffering from an eating disorder.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—This poignant memoir, cowritten by Elena Dunkle and her mother, Clare, describes the young woman's battle with anorexia, which spanned several years. Opening just before her senior year of high school, Elena relates her experiences in and out of treatment facilities in often stark detail. A rigidly self-disciplined overachiever, the author is critical, both of herself and those around her, and some readers may find her overly judgmental. Because the book only focuses on several periods when she relapsed, it often leaps forward several years, giving it a disjointed feel, and many figures in Elena's life are underdeveloped. However, this young author displays promise. Written in the present tense, her narrative presents an almost frantic sense of immediacy that is well suited to the subject matter, as Elena describes difficult therapy sessions, her sometimes strained but always loving relationship with her mother, friendships with other patients, and events in her life that contributed to her disorder. Her angry, self-critical inner monologue ("The feeding pump is swelling you up. You're not anorexic! Who do you think you're fooling?") effectively conveys her skewed perspective in a manner similar to Laurie Halse Anderson's Wintergirls (Viking, 2009). Fans of that title and Alyssa B. Sheinmel's Stone Girl (Knopf, 2012) will appreciate this painfully honest look at a young woman's struggle. VERDICT A solid addition to memoir collections.—Mahnaz Dar, School Library Journal

Amazing!
By Jessica Brake
This was a very raw, personal read. I felt as though Elena was sitting here, telling me her story. There are so many books on this subject, but this one is definitely in a class of its own. The family dynamics were very realistic, and it held my interest throughout its entirety. I highly recommend checking this one out.

Moving Story of Eating Disorder and Recovery
By Jessica Harris
I really enjoyed "Elena Vanishing". It was a powerful, moving and raw book about recovering from an eating disorder and other mental health issues. It was a five star read for someone who has not suffered from anorexia but for me, someone who is also in recovery, it's a very stereotypical book.

There are many reasons this book is stereotypical but I will just name a few. First, anorexic don't vomit, if she is vomiting which she was, she is bulimic. Second, not all anorexics don't eat, some just exercise so much they burn off all the calories or use diet pills or laxatives to shed calories. Perhaps this mistake wouldn't have bothered me if the author hadn't portrayed herself as being an expert on eating disorders. Third, some people with eating disorders enjoy eating yet still restrict or over exercise. Fourth, not all anorexics have a " little voice" telling them negative things. And the final thing is not all eating disorders are caused by traumatic events. Like I said these "mistakes" wouldn't have bothered me if in the beginning and ending of the story the author had not specifically said it "wasn't your typical eating disorder story", really it was. I've read many stories of anorexics and none of them glamour it the way the author said they did, but perhaps that's just because I've mostly read current ones. Maybe and hopefully times have changed since then.

I did enjoy the book. The author clearly described how the disease destroyed her life and what a struggle it was to rebuild it. I feel like her first description of a treatment center was most realistic. The average treatment center would not have given her all the privileges and luxuries she had in her final two centers. Simple things like cell phones and make up aren't allowed in the average treatment centers. However, the authors family is very wealthy so I'm sure the treatment centers for wealthy children have more privileges than your average center.

Throughout the novel the author seemed like kind of a narcissistic bitch, but when you see what all she is going through and has been through you can understand why. She also shows her real self to children and sick people so you can really see she is a good person and still want to root for her to get well.

She describes the struggle and the faults of treatment centers and meds so well that it's very real and raw. If it weren't for the few stereotypical points this book would have gotten five stars. I would recommend it for readers but for a less stereotypical read I'd say check out "Letting Ana Go" or "Paperweight". Overall it's still a good read. I read it in less than one day.

A truthful look at the life of someone with an eating disorder.
By Casey Thomas
Elena Vanishing is a memoir written by Elena Dunkle and her mother Clare. Readers follow Elena's journey with her eating disorder from high school to college and after. She is her own worst enemy as the voice in her head pushes her to be perfect, thin, and beautiful. She is hospitalized and institutionalized a number of times, but nothing would stop her on her destructive quest to perfection. After a tragic event leads her into an even deeper, darker downward spiral, she decides to finally seek treatment. It's not an easy road for her and she never shies away from the truth.

I really enjoyed reading about Elena's struggles and how it affected not only her, but the people that surround her as well. I can only imagine how difficult that time in her life must have been and appreciate her open honesty in her memoir. It was an excellent read and I highly recommend it to young adults looking for a good non-fiction book.
