This is an excellent introduction to graduate-level linear algebra, touching on theory, applications, and algorithms. It's one of those books I wish had been available when I was in grad school.

I'm just a beginning graduate student so I can't really compare this to anything else, however, I can say a few things. This book requires substantial mathematical maturity. It is very dense in content, and I find it to require slow, careful, reading. Much of the definitions are woven into the body of the text and not set off as the axioms or theorems. The great thing about this book is the wealth of exercises (over a thousand). As the author admits, many of them are quite difficult, and there is no asterisk or anything else to indicate which ones these are! Also, many of the questions are open ended. The worse thing about this book is that chapter 1 should properly be called chapter 0, because it contains only preliminary notation and terminology.
