Claude Lecouteux is a former professor of medieval literature and civilization at the Sorbonne. From Abracadabra to the Avada Kedavra and Rennervate used in Harry Potter, everyone has become familiar with magic words; but novels, films, and comic books can provide only a simplified, distorted version of them. Shouted, whispered, chanted, recited, or muttered by a magician, wizard, or witch--using singular and even incomprehensible words to obtain supernatural effects--these perpetually evolving spells come down to us from the dawn of time. Thanks to the efforts of the scholars from a variety of disciplines, we now have a corpus consisting of tens of thousands of accounts at our disposal that can be found in charms, orisons, blessings, conjurations, and medical prescriptions.

THE USEFUL NATURE OF THE SPELLS

One of the purposes of magical phrases and words was the protection of people and property. It involved the prevention of something from happening or halting an action already at work.

Then there are the spells intended to grant one’s wishes. These range from desires for wealth--through the discovery of hidden treasures!--to catching fish, to winning the love of a person one lusts after.That the phrases may have been incomprehensible was of no importance as their use was based on an act of faith, relying first on the magic and authority of the text, then on the tradition. If they have been handed down, it is because they work, and the more impenetrable they seem, the more effective they are!

WRITING AND CODING

To write magic words or phrases, we are sometimes told it is necessary to use one’s own blood or that of animals--the most often cited animals are bats, cats (preferably black ones), roosters, and dogs.

From Abraxas to Zoar

Ablanathanalba: A word that means “You are our father,” endowed with magical properties and commonly used on Greek amulets and papyri. One on the collection of the National Library of France (n� 177) depicts an armed spirit with serpents for legs and a rooster’s head over the palindrome Ablanathanalba on one side. On the opposite side there is a winged god standing on the back of a reclining lion with magical letters. This was all intended to protect the bearer from fear. A Greek papyrus or curse tablet dating from the second to fourth centuries places it at the top of a series of words arranged in a triangle that shrinks one letter every line: ablanathanalba; ae�iou�; iae�baphrenemoun; �uoi�ea; akrammachamarei.

It can also be found in a Greek charm for obtaining victory in the phrase ABLANATHANALBA AKRAMMACHAMARI PEPHNA PHO’ZA PHNEBENNOUNI NAACHTHIP...OUNORBA.

A Coptic amulet on papyrus that may date from the fourth century, found in Egypt, bears this phrase: AKRAMMAHAMARIAABLANAPHANALBAA. On a gem intended to inspire love, Ablanathanalba is written in a circle around the first name, Faustina. A curse tablet found in Cypress shows the compound ABLANATHANALBASISOPETRON. On a phylactery discovered in Germany that was intended to protect several people, we read:

I'm a little biased because I have all of the books from this author that have been translated and am a huge fan of his work. This is a very informative and thorough book on the subject. You won't go wrong.

Thorough beyond expectation

Claude Lecouteux's "Dictionary of Ancient Magic Words and Spells", proved to be a fairly academic collection of charms and spells from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century. Collected from various European, Asian, and African sources, the reader is able to catch a glimpse at what magic and medicine were like in "the old days". Arranged by the spell characters themselves, the reader won't be able to crack this open and look up Medevil love spells, but browsing the text provides an idea at the simplicity and complexity of magic. Another much appreciated insight in the book is the examples of prayers and blessings used as medicine calling on God, Jesus, and the Virgin Mary as well as other heavenly entities showing that once upon a time magic was not limited to the pagans and heathens. The only downside I saw in this text is the Praeambulus; Briefly talking about things like "Paganism and Christianity" and "Rituals and Ingredients", the author wrote academically as if the reader comes to the subject with knowledge and I felt there were holes for someone who has no prior academic study of the subjects at hand.

Overall, this dictionary is a must add to any metaphysical/occult library. The bibliography alone is worth the cost of the book.

Redundant and unnecessary bs!!!!

Terrible! This book is quite redundant. There are lots of words that are used for the same exact thing over and over again. It gives u at least 100 words for fevers.....to top it off, there is nothing in this book pertaining to prosperity, wealth, or empowerment. If u constantly have fevers and headaches, then this is perfect for u, otherwise u should run the other way and don't look back.

Excellent

Is the adventuring life too much for one small hobbit in the great big world? Read this book and find out!

OK, do you have a young reader whom you would like to introduce to The Hobbit? Well, this graphic novel is just the thing! David Wenzel does an excellent job of illustrating the novel, painting the character just like you would expect them to look (unlike some earlier illustrators). Now, the story is abridged, but on the whole, an excellent job was done of turning that book into a graphic novel.

Overall I think that this is an excellent graphic novel, and an excellent adaptation of The Hobbit. My ten-year-old son and I highly recommend it to you!

Beautifully told literary classic.

This story is a very beautifully told literary classic. The intimate proximatey of such a well developed character is truly amazing. White tells a wonderful sotry of a gay boy growing up in the 50's--though he never truly accepts it; not until the second book of the series, anyhow.
Warnings: Many people reviewed this book negatively and I wish to use this space to share who will NOT enjoy this book. First of all, you must enjoy the "literary" style of writing; if you don't enjoy classics and works by the likes of John Irving than this is not for you. A fine example is to compare it to J.D. Salenger's "Catcher in the Rye"--if you read this in your schooling years and hated it, you'll probably hate this also. If you like a solid and clear course of plot you may not enjoy it; this book is written much like life is lived, and that is with a degree of chaos. Also, if you are homophonic, this book is obviously not for you unless you are attempting to open your mind. Finally, if you are the type of person who is offended by the unappologetic beliefs of the 50's that homosexuality is an illness, etc., then you may not want to read this; this was an issue with me, but I came to understand that this would be the thought process of someone in the narrators posision at his age and time.
I loved this book, and hope that other readers will expierience the same amazement as I did.

An enduring masterwork

Edmund White is one of America's finest writers. From his early forays into a then edgey genre of stories that happen to include in depth studies of gay men and their questionable place in the public fabric to his current biographies of famous writers (Proust, et al) to his assessment in literary form of the AIDS crisis and it effect on life in all of America, White has become ever more erudite, polished in technique, and fascinating to explore. Because of this current prominence among gifted writers it is rewarding to return to the early works and see if they contained all the seeds of his success. Having just re-read "A Boy's Own Story" I am even more deeply moved and impressed with White than I remembered. This treasureable book is not just a Pink Triangle groupie read. This is wondrously beautiful writing by all standards. White knows how to make the English linguage sing with acute observations that begin with a keen delineation of line but then blossom fully into metaphors than can only be called poems. These descriptions apply not only to walks in nature or observed qualities of light at varying times of day, but they are used to define his characters in such a vivid manner that they literally step off the page, indelibly.
And the story.....this tale of the grappling of a youth over questions not only of sexuality but of coming of age in social, religious, educational, dream vs reality strikes chords in all of us. His unnamed narrator is in a way the Everyman of Youth. White does not go for the happy Hollywood ending: he writes about the truths of decisions gone awry, dreams dismemebered, realites coming into being. I would hope that "A Boy's Own Story" would be part of the required reading list for the liberal arts schools who care about not only quality of literature but also of complexity of becoming an adult.

In the beginning....

Edmund White's brand of prose is top-shelf. From page one of this novel, his first loosely autobiographical piece about growing up gay, I was bewitched, bothered, and bewildered by him once again.
I have now read his first-person narrative trilogy in full, though out of sequence, and each book is captivating. While this, his early adolescence, is not as sexually charged as the others, it is still replete with the same auto-erotica that emanates from his fertile imagination in the subsequent pieces of the work as a whole.
The protagonist, still unnamed, draws readers into his world of summers at the lake with his well-off family; his first tentative sexual liaisons; his forays into the world of heterosexual 'normalcy', his escape from parochial school to the comforts of an all-boys private academy, and his reluctant quest to discover his homosexual self. Through the pages of this novel, the boy takes diffident steps out of the closet, even in the 1950's, when such actions were decidedly more taboo than in present day, yet White's experience can be understood by all who have come out, whether it were 1955, 1985, or 2002.
White takes his narrator, and the reader, through the highs and lows of self doubt and self awareness; through numerous quests for love and acceptance; through the dangers and disappointments of trying to conceal your true nature from the world and yourself, and finally through the daunting labors of disclosure of his homosexual tendencies to others. In the finale, the protagonist arrives, albeit in a disturbing way, at childhood's end, and forges ahead toward adulthood.
Ever present are White's frank, revealing takes on being gay. No matter what your age; no matter what the year, White's voice speaks to all. His trilogy of growing up gay in the 50's and 60's and being gay in the 70's, 80's, and beyond is among the finest examples of gay literature I have ever read.

Karen Solie's best book yet

Karen Solie's best book yet. With her ear to the ground, Solie's quantum leaps of the imagination match the her encyclopedic reach, demonstrating that the bar for great poets is to write about life lived outside the posturing navel gazing that is the regurgitated daily bread of too many poems. Solie invests her poetry with great beauty, intelligence and feeling. Take this excerpt from the brilliant "Bitumen":

Jackpine Mine photographs beautifully on the shoulders of the day,
in the minutes before sunset it’s still legal to hunt. One might,
like Caspar David Friedrich’s Wanderer, at a certain remove
from principal events, cut a sensitive figure in the presence
of the sublime. Except you can smell it down here. Corrosive
vapours unexpectedly distributed, caustic particulate infiltrates
your mood. As does the tar sands beetle whose bite scars, from whom
grown men run. Attracted by the same sorrowful chemical compound
emitted by damaged trees on which it feeds, its aural signature
approximates the rasp of causatum rubbing its parts together.
The only other living thing in situ, in the open pit where swims
the bitumen, extra brilliant, dense, massive, in the Greek asphaltos,
“to make stable,” “to secure.” Pharmacist’s earth that resists decay,
resolves and attenuates, cleanses wounds. Once used to burn
the houses of our enemies, upgraded now to refinery-ready feedstock,
raw crude flowing through channels of production and distribution.
Combustion is our style. It steers all things from the black grave of
Athabasca Wabiskaw.

There are very view experiences in poetry that are as complete as those spent reading Karen Solie's work. I highly recommend it.

Alan Turing died in 1954, but the themes of his life epitomize the turn of the millennium. A pure mathematician from a tradition that prided itself on its impracticality, Turing laid the foundations for modern computer science, writes Andrew Hodges:

Alan had proved that there was no "miraculous machine" that could solve all mathematical problems, but in the process he had discovered something almost equally miraculous, the idea of a universal machine that could take over the work of any machine.

During World War II, Turing was the intellectual star of Bletchley Park, the secret British cryptography unit. His work cracking the German's Enigma machine code was, in many ways, the first triumph of computer science. A book for the dedicated math fan

"The Imitation Game" was my favorite movie of 2014. I devoured the shows on PBS about cracking Enigma. I was glad to start reading this book. Soon I wasn't so glad. The writer, a mathematician, doesn't have the gift for narrative needed to bring Turing, and the group at Bletchley Park, to life.
The trivia included rather than pruned shows a lack of writing skill. For example, in early chapters about Turing's schooling, one reads nearly every note sent home by a schoolmaster. But a more major event (nailing Turing under floorboards) was glossed over in a sentence without a comment by the author as to impact, or primary source quote concerning the incident.
More troubling is the utter boring chapter on Bletchley Park. How can this chapter be boring? Yet it is. The explanation and sketches of how Turing's machine worked are unsatisfactory. I didn't learn anything from the authors (and I had several advanced math classes in college). I contrast this with biographies of physicists, contemporaries of Turing but written by writers (Richard Rhodes, for example): gripping books that manage to explain quantum theory or the workings of particle accelerators quite well.
Absolutely unsettling is the jarring way the author skips from topic to topic. On one page he note that Turing accepted his sexual orientation; on the next there is talk of suicide. Again, there is no comment by the author. Considering how Turing's life ended, one would expect more explication here. Related to this topic is the story of Turing and Bob Augenfeld, the young refugee Turing sponsored. Turing propositioning the minor Augenfeld would today be classed as sexual predation, yet the author glossed over it, noting that Augenfeld remained friends with Turing. An alternative explanation might be that Augenfeld hoped Turing would help get his mother out of Vienna, and did not seek to sever the relationship for this reason. This was in 1941.
In summary, this book was slow reading, even for someone interested in the man and the topic. I give it 3 stars because of the importance of the topic and the many contribution Turing made to mathematics and computer sciences.

An enjoyable historic read...

Where does Alan Turing: The Enigma rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
A bit more difficult to listen to than a fiction book because of the material it discusses, however it was a good book and audiobook combination. Highly recommend it for people who are interested in historic events and computers or encryption.

Who was your favorite character and why?
The story is about Alan, so I would have to say he is the one I like the most in this book.

Which scene was my favorite?
Not any one scene, but being able to see his passion and drive to get to a solution, often it was a detriment to him in the end (lost sleep, non compliant with work role, etc.) or others around him.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved me?
Not one specific point of movement for me. Maybe the ending of the book and seeing how his life ended and that he did not receive the credit due his name until recent history.

Too many digressions and diversions at the beginning!

I am upgrading my review from *** to **** as I plow through the book. The book is quite good, but quite detailed or technical. Not for a general reader.

It is quite good to see the role that Turing played during WW II and how effective he was. He was also very ineffective at times because he was clueless about social clues and unwilling/unable to understand military/war hierarchies. Still a fascinating and detailed, detailed, and more detailed book.

My original review:

Digression after digression, especially at the beginning of the book. Do I really need to know what letters Turing sent to a friend's mother or how she replied? Quite distracting. Too many digressions about historical figures, too. There is too much of that in the first 15% or so of the book.

Once the book gets into Turing's post-graduate work and his work to create computers, that kind detail is very useful -- and relevant.

I ordered this book as a Kindle book, because there were too many complaints about the small font in the print copies. It's easy to read on a Kindle app.

Parasylum is back and it's scarier than ever! Robbie Thomas has once again proven he is a master at writing horror. The fear is palatable and without a doubt will have your heart pounding and you at the edge of your seat.

After the surprise ending in the first Parasylum installment you would think a whole new cast of characters would be on this investigation. But you would be wrong. The team of five is back in full force on what could be the one to go down in their records as the investigation that almost ended their lives.

From the moment the team sets foot in the Rendezvous Hotel they are confronted with threats by the ghosts of mobsters from the 1920s looking to add more victims to their stockpile. With each floor they investigate the walls seem to come alive with demons and monsters, and situations that will have the team questioning their sanity.

Throw in a rogue team of investigators and the haunting ramps up to an even horrific level, causing them all to start running for their lives in search of escape from the Rendezvous Hotel.

Any horror aficionado will crawl inside this book wanting to take part in the terrifying action. Thomas, a psychic and avid paranormal investigator, knows the terror of an active investigation. As a result he is able to transfer the fear into words that most definitely rival Steven King, the reigning master of horror.

The devil is in the details and Thomas has done his homework. He brings all the elements of investigation to his readers in the form of equipment and terminology. He continued development of his characters that enables readers to make a connection, which inevitably draws them further into the story.

Bottom line; if you are looking for a horror story that will have you turning on all the lights, checking under the furniture and making sure the doors are all locked, this is the book for you. Pull up your big boy panties and be prepared for the scare of your lives. This one is a killer.

Robbie Thomas has done it again with this second installment of Parasylum. The paranormal team once again goes into the Parasylum but who will come out alive? Get you copy of this creepy page turner and find out. Robbie Thomas is such a wonderful Author and I love the versatility of his work. Robbie covers everything from books that are spiritually uplifting, books about our dreams, the paranormal and now the spooky Parasylum. I can't wait to see what he will come up with next? Great job again Robbie..

Scarier than Parasylum, spooky, and down right awesome.

I finished Parasylum and promptly was sent Parasylum II from author Robbie Thomas. After the end of Parasylum, I found myself mourning the loss of a novice, but knowledgeable, paranormal investigations team. When I cracked the digital spine Parasylum II, I was shocked to find the same team regrouping to investigate the Rendezvous Hotel. . . .

Just when you thought the first book was over, a new dream state begins. Is this the real life.... or is this just fantasy...?

Robbie Thomas takes his personal experience, knowledge and expertise in the paranormal realm and combines his creative writing skills to once again create a masterpiece horror story. I was completely enthralled with the team. I said it before, and I will say it again, Robbie does an effin fantastic job "painting" the interpersonal relationship amongst the team members in the Parasylum novels.

Parasylum is back and it's scarier than ever! Robbie Thomas has once again proven he is a master at writing horror. The fear is palatable and without a doubt will have your heart pounding and you at the edge of your seat.

I am completely obsessed with anything from the roaring 20s to the pin-up 40s. The team in Parasylum II find their way into an investigation at a historic hotel. A glimpse into the hotel's history, you will find classic mobsters that would put Chicago's history to shame. Mobsters were hell in flesh, one can only imagine what they are like in death. The team begins to question reality, and their sanity, when confronted with demonic forces who currently run the hotel. With death piling high, team members disappearing, and chaos abound, will the team be able to escape alive?

As a paranormal investigator myself, and a psychic medium, I am in love with the writing and styling of the story lines in both the Parasylum novels. Robbie does a job well done and I look forward to future books of his.
These books are great for horror lovers, paranormal enthusiasts, or anyone looking for a good scare!
