I was truly fascinated by this book!

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Anyone could have killed Aylin. The story opens up with her cleaning lady finding her dead. The coroner marked her death “A Freak Accident”. To say the least….it was freaky.
Then Ayse Kulin takes us back in time to her Great-Great Grandfather, whom Aylin apparently took after. And, we learn all about Aylin's life. Aylin was a strong, smart, talented and accomplished woman. If there was something she wanted to accomplish, she went after it! I was in awe of all that she managed in her life.
When I began reading this book, I had to do some research about Aylin, as this book reads like a Biography. But, it was not a true story. Ayse Kulin wrote this so well….it was very hard to believe that Aylin did not exist. That was very impressive! Well-written, to say the least!
This book has also been translated from Turkish to English; so there are some errors in translation, but it does not ruin story.
I was truly fascinated by this book, and so glad that I read it. You will delve deep into the life of a woman that you will find yourself wanting to learn more about.
Ayse Kulin is an excellent writer. I was impressed.

She draws the reader in to love Aylin, just as many of those around her ...

Kulin paints a portrait of an attractive and fascinating character. She draws the reader in to love Aylin, just as many of those around her were mesmerized by her. Her story reads more like a collection of stories, as each section of her life has such a distinct flavor, completely separate from the previous episode. The only single common thread between them is the character of the heroine. A Turkish childhood, marriage to a Libyan prince, medical studies in Switzerland, traveling as a hippie, forging a successful career as a psychiatrist in New York City, being a lieutenant colonel in the US Army and being the wife of a Hollywood film producer -- we revolve from one scenario to the next. Another great book after Last Train To Istanbul, well done Ms Kulin.

About the Author
Dr. Larry Barton is president of DeVry Institute of Technology in Phoenix, AZ. He is a leading expert in crisis management and management communications, and has authored two books for ITP: Crisis In Organizations (1993, second edition forthcoming March 2000) and Ethics: The Enemy In The Workplace (1995). Dr. Barton served as Director of Issues Management of Motorola, Inc., from 1994-95, managing global public relations for the technology giant. He was promoted to Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs in 1995 and led global PR for the company's semiconductor division until he decided to return to academe last year. Dr. Barton taught organizational behavior and crisis communication at Boston College, the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, Harvard Business School and Penn State Graduate Center prior to being named president of DeVry in 1999. He received a coveted Fulbright Senior Fellow Award in 1994, studying comparative Japanese management of crises such as product recalls and workplace violence. He was named Teacher of the Year in 1992 by the Board of Regents of the University of Nevada. As a consultant, Dr. Barton has managed response to over 300 serious incidents worldwide, including extortion, terrorism targeting industry, environmental incidents and rumors in the workplace. He has written for over 35 refereed academic journals worldwide and is the editor of seven books. He has been interviewed on ABC Nightline and CNBC and profiled in The Wall Street Journal. Dr. Barton's research interests include crisis management, workplace violence and change management.

A Light introduction to Stoicism

Set in Ohio State Penitentiary, The Epictetus Club is about a group of inmates that study and implement principles of Stoic philosophy to their lives, and use the lessons that they learn together to get through prison physically and emotionally unscathed. Led by a man known as Zeno (named after the great Stoic sage), the group learns to use psychological techniques such as "The ABCs of inner boxing" in order to master their thoughts, emotions, and desires, and in turn, themselves. The story is told through the eyes of author Jeff Traylor, a counselor at the prison who takes a fly-on-the-wall approach and watches, listens, and records the Epictetus Club group discussions.

Well told and effectively written, the book is an easy and interesting read that goes into surprising detail about the tenets of Stoic philosophy. For the uninitiated, it serves as a good introduction and example of how to apply the ideas presented to the reader's own life.

The Epictetus Club leader and role-model, Zeno, is a man originally imprisoned for murder, but who then learned the ways of the Stoics and changed his life by changing his perceptions of people and events. Shortly after coming to prison, Zeno came upon a copy of The Enchiridion, by the ancient Stoic sage, Epictetus, and immediately saw the wisdom in its pages. Instead of using his boxing skills to attain respect, and therefore safety, in the harsh prison environment, he gained respect and admiration for the skills he learned from the practice of Stoicism. The tranquility that he achieved caught the attention of other inmates who wished to gain tranquility themselves, and he agreed to teach them. Thus, the Epictetus Club was born. Since he was a boxer before coming to prison, Zeno teaches the philosophy of Stoicism through the use of boxing analogies. When the attacking punch (self-defeating thought) presents itself, the Stoic responds with a block (an assessment of the true nature of the situation), then reacts with a counter-punch (replacement of the attacking thought with a productive thought).

Although the story is interesting and the characters well-developed, perhaps the most interesting part of The Epictetus Club is Stoicism itself. Mentioning and citing the works of major Stoic sages like Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius, the book details Stoic ideals like living for a purpose, social responsibility, accepting life come what may, and consciously choosing to find the learning opportunity in any given situation.

Stoicism is not a religion, but a collection of ideas that attempt to construct a comprehensive philosophy of life. It argues that although it is easy to get distracted with unnecessary and illogical pursuits, life is about living in accordance with nature. Many people strive to become rich and accumulate an ever-growing stockpile of material possessions, but never reach true happiness. Stoics make the claim that the key to happiness is not things or status, but tranquility, which can be reached by controlling one's thoughts and desires. Instead of concerning ourselves with things and events that we have no control over, we should concern ourselves with understanding the true nature of things and adapting ourselves accordingly.

The only negative thing that I have to say about the book is the author's apparent obsession with Zeus, and Zeus' involvement in Stoic philosophy. Many Stoic sages lived in ancient Rome, and accordingly believed in and worshipped Zeus and other Roman gods of the time, but Stoicism is not a religion at all. In his writings, Epictetus mentions Zeus (sometimes metaphorically), and on the last page of the Enchiridion there is even a copy of his prayer to Zeus, but in no way is a Stoic, living in ancient times or now, obligated or even encouraged by Stoicism to worship any god or gods at all. Traylor seemed to miss this idea while writing The Epictetus Club, by mentioning Zeus repeatedly throughout the book, even occasionally praising him as though he had a hand in causing particular outcomes of situations. As I said, the book is an impressive piece, but the Zeus stuff is disappointing and unnecessary, in that it could work to offend some readers, perhaps even turning them off to Stoicism.

All in all, The Epictetus Club is worth every minute spent reading it. In the short period of time since I bought it, I have already borrowed it out once and had numerous discussions about the book and Stoicism itself. I would recommend both the book and Stoic philosophy to anyone who experiences disappointment, anger, frustration, or unhappiness.

This book and Stoicism encourage the ideals of life-long learning and development. In the spirit of those ideals, here are some important points of the book that I plan to consider for my own personal growth and development:

*"You can make your life a palace or a prison just by how you think." (p. 23)

*"If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you always got." (p. 26)

*"One's purpose does not have to be big and showy - the simplest things can have the greatest effects." (p. 56)

*"One of the signs of the dawning of self-mastery is the gradual elimination of blame." (p. 70)

*"There is no such thing as being the victim of another. You can only be a victim of yourself." (p. 75)

*"Assume all events happen to you for your good. All events contain an advantage for you if you look for it." (p. 79)

*"If you desire something that is beyond your control, disappointment will surely follow. Likewise, if you resist things that are beyond your control such as illness, death, or misfortune, you will also be disappointed." (p. 95)

*"We are in charge of ourselves, and no one can upset us without our cooperation." (p. 112)

*"Only the weak feel compelled to defend themselves or explain themselves to others. Let your good actions speak on your behalf. We can't control the impressions others form about us, and trying to do so only demeans us." (p. 115)

*"Other people have the freedom of speech - they can say whatever they want. In fact, I give them my permission!" (p. 122)

This book is no less than a wake call to anyone who needs to relook into their personal life. The ideas shared in the book may be geared towards inmates but any man/woman can read this book and find multiple ideas to add to there personal growing closet. Its a very easy read, and definitely will be read in a couple of days if not in one day. The main charecters are brought to life and the all out external descrioption of the prison is great. Buy it, rent it, steal it.....just read it!

Twenty-two new variations ranging--as the title promises--from hard sf to the supernatural, and sometimes successfully blending them. Outstanding examples of the latter include Karen Joy Fowler's long story about voodoo and drugs, Michael Bishop's extended parable exploring apartheid and physics, and Ursula K. LeGuin's tale of space habitat refugees who hallucinate the ruined Earth they've fled. The finest entry of all is Marcos Donnelly's ``Tracking the Random Variable''--a sparkling, witty study of statistics, obsession, and infidelity. Also, interestingly, two translations appear, one from French (descent into madness) and one from German (resurrection). While more variable in quality, the remainder should provide sufficient scope--ecological parables, ghosts, sculpture, helpful aliens, psychic powers, witches, mathematical puzzles, werebeasts, and more--to tempt even readers turned off by the bland, dull, writers'-workshop uniformity so characteristic of short stories in recent years. -- Copyright �1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. A nice variety

Highlights include:
* James Morrow's "Daughter Earth" -- I'm not a big fan of Morrow's short stories, and I've not read his novels, but this story astonished me with its audacity. Not just anyone could pull this off--I'm not even sure that Morrow does--but just the fact that he tried gives him brownie points in my book. A biosphere is born to a new age-farmer couple, and they try to keep it out of the hands of the government. Life-affirming and planet-affirming.
* Mark L. Van Name and Pat Murphy's "Desert Rain" -- Pat told us (in the NOVA Express interview) that she was writing this story with Mark, but she didn't say it was gonna be this good. An artist's construction of rain in the desert is hampered by her feelings for her husband and the home software he's creating. This is what Jonathan Carroll would write if he wrote science fiction.
* Kristine Kathryn Rusch's "Precious Moments" -- Kind of an "Odd Joan" story, filled with this author's nouveau family angst and some really intriguing characters.
* Peg Kerr's "Lethe"--This is a tale about medical and cultural responsibility for dying. It reminded me of the empathy of Theodore Sturgeon, and this story should be considered for the award that bears his name. I'm keeping my eye out for Kerr stories in the future.
* Marcos Donnelly's "Tracing the Random Variable" -- A Twilight Zone-ish tale of a man obsessed with stability, that only serves to increase his instability.
* Norman Spinrad's "The Helping Hand" -- It may be a little saccharine tasting, but who'd have thought that Spinrad would write a little piece of wish-fulfillment fantasy like this? I couldn't help myself; I like it.
* Elizabeth Hand's "Snow on Sugar Mountain" - I was predisposed not to like this story by Hand, based on having read some wrong-headed critical pieces by her in the past, but she overcame all that, and this tale of an orphan, a dying astronaut, and their friendship was probably my third favorite story in this collection.
And that's not to mention the contributions by Tony Daniel, Greg Benford, Ursula K. Le Guin, Wolfgang Jeschke, Karen Joy Fowler, R.V. Branham, or Michael Bishop, which I also liked.

The aim of this book is to to clarify the nature of backsliding - of actions that display some weakness of will -- using traditional philosophical techniques that date back to Plato and Aristotle (whose work on weakness of will or "akrasia" he discusses) and some new studies in the emerging field of experimental philosophy. Mele then attacks the thesis that backsliding is an illusion because people never freely act contrarily to what they judge is best. He argues that it is extremely plausible that if people ever act freely, they sometimes backslide. At the book's heart is the development of a theoretical and empirical framework that sheds light both on backsliding and on exercises of self-control that prevent it. Here, Mele draws on work in social and developmental psychology and in psychiatry to motivate a view of human behavior in which both backsliding and overcoming the temptation to backslide are explicable. He argues that backsliding is no illusion and our theories about the springs of action, the power of evaluative judgments, human agency, human rationality, practical reasoning, and motivation should accommodate backsliding.

About the Author

Alfred R. Mele is the William H. and Lucyle T. Werkmeister Professor of Philosophy at Florida State
University. He is the author of six previous OUP books: Irrationality (1987), Springs of Action (1992), Autonomous Agents (1995), Motivation and Agency (2003), Free Will and Luck (2006), and Effective Intentions (2009). He also is the editor of The Philosophy of Action (OUP 1997) and a coeditor of four other OUP volumes: Mental Causation (1993), The Oxford Handbook of Rationality (2004), Rationality and the Good (2007), and Free Will and Consciousness: How Might They Work? (2010).

An accessible account of Al Mele's writing on will-power over the last two decades.

It was good. If you are interested in academic work on weakness of will, you should read it.

Of special note is the shift from "strict akratic action" in Mele's seminal 1987 Irrationality and toward the slightly modified "core akratic (or weak-willed) action." Core akratic action includes the earlier "free intentional action against the agents own better judgment" but clarifies that the action be "sane," "based on practical reasoning," and that the agent be "non-depressed." Here Mele is both shoring up his position against criticism and positioning his view rhetorically as the central account.

Mele addresses the common language controversy between himself and Richard Holton. He is less than thorough about it and so the argument is only somewhat persuasive. But, the dispute made is clear.

The section on free-will is aimed at avoiding a full blown account of free action, but is still moderately technical. Not a good primer on free will, but a fair accounting of how to discuss weakness of will without such an account. Mele draws together lots of his previous work.

By far the most exciting element of the book is the chapter explaining "backsliding" or the process of failing to act on a reasoned judgment about what all things considered ought to be done. This section is a very helpful synthesis of Mele's previous work into a compelling account of practical rationality and failure.

Mele ends by discussing some of the results described in Baumeister's recent book Willpower.

All in all, this is a good book, well written and packed with connections between more tightly argued articles.
