Genthe's Photographs of San Francisco's Old Chinatown, by John Kuo Wei Tchen

In 1895, a cultured, well-educated young German named Arnold Genthe arrived in San Francisco as a tutor to the son of an aristocratic family. Almost immediately, Genthe was attracted by Chinatown, or "Tangrenbu" — a teeming ten-block area of crowded buildings, narrow streets, and exotic sights and sounds in the shadow of Nob Hill.
Fascinated by a living culture totally foreign to his experience, Genthe began to photograph Tangrenbu and its inhabitants. Today, these photographs (over 200 are known to exist) are the best visual documentary record of Chinatown at the turn of the century, offering priceless glimpses of the rich street life of the district before it was leveled by the great earthquake and fire of 1906.
Rediscover the lost world of old Chinatown in serene and enduring images of cobbled streets and bustling shops, street vendors and merchants, fish and vegetable markets, Devil's Kitchen, the Street of the Gamblers, Portsmouth Square and more. But most of all, enjoy distinctive candid portraits of the people of old Chinatown: a pipe-bowl member, a paper gatherer, itinerant peddlers, toy merchants, boys playing shuttlecock, a fortune-teller, a sword dancer, women and children in ornate holiday finery, an aged opium smoker and many other unaffected and revealing images.
Rich in detail and atmosphere, the photographs are complemented by historian John Tchen's informative and well-researched text, which outlines the turbulent history of Chinese-Americans in California, dispels numerous myths about Chinatown and its residents, and illuminates the role of Genthe's photographs in capturing the subtle flavor and texture of everyday life in the district before 1906.

This is an excellent book
By Wayne Collier
Arnold Genthe was a German doctor of philosophy who arrived in San Francisco in 1895. He was fascinated by the Chinese and used his skill as an amatuer photographer to take over 200 photos of Chinatown's "Tangrenbu" section. These are valuable photographs as they depict Chinatown as it existed before the 1906 earthquake. Tangrenbu was the home of thousands of Chinese who were forced to live in this area due to de facto segregation and deep seated prejudice by San Franciscans. The Chinese were clannish and left few written records of their lives. The 1906 disaster destroyed whatever documents which may have existed so Genthe's pictures assume an importance beyond the mere fact of depicting persons and scenes.
Chinese had been living in San Francisco as early as 1838, a full ten years before gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill. Between 1838 and 1849, Chinese were men of means, generally merchants, and few in number. As San Francisco boomed with gold seekers, the city experienced a continuing shortage of workers who were needed to lay roadways, reclaim swampy land, make boots and shoes, and to perform hundreds of other tasks. Native Americans wouldn't cooperate and Mexican-Americans were investing their time in gold mining.
The solution was Chinese laborers as they had been used profitably on British colonial plantations in South America and the West Indies. Chinese merchants were employed as middlemen in the process of supplying the laborers. In a span of 30 years, hundreds of thousands of Chinese were lured onto British, American, and other western ships for the long trip across the Pacific Ocean. Conditions on these ships were often worse than on those of the African slave trade. The mortality rate ranged as high as 40%.
During the 1850s and 1860s, 80% of the Chinese in California were spread throughout the mining areas. They were principally used in large company owned mines and had little hope of holding personal mining claims. They were disliked by most independent miners because of their race and their association with the large mining interests. The Chinese miners were also subject to the Foreign Miner's Tax. As primary contributors, they accounted for 50% of California's entire state revenues from 1850 to 1870.
After the decline of mining, the building of railroads became the focus of merchant interests. Irish immigrants were hired by the Central Pacific (CP) to start construction near Sacramento but many refused the debilitating work of carving a few feet of granite daily from the Sierra Nevada mountain range. In 1865, the CP hired 50 Chinese laborers on a trial basis and told them to carve a road through the mountains.
Pleased with the results, 10,000 Chinese were hired within 3 years and drove roadbeds through and over the mountain ranges. In the severe winter of 1866, Chinese crews worked and lived underneath the snow. Avalanches were frequent and buried many Chinese workers. Two of them were found dead, buried under 50 feet of snow with shovels in their hands. An 1870 news article reported the shipment of 10 tons of bones, representing 1200 Chinese railroad workers being sent to China for burial. Chinese were into other areas of work including sewing, shoe shops, etc. By 1870, they formed one-fourth of the state's employed but only one-twelth of its population.
Discriminatory laws were passed against the Chinese including exclusion acts, Chinese children were denied access to public schools and their parents were not allowed the rights granted to U. S. citizens. Tangrenbu or "Little China" ceased to exist after the 1906 earthquake. This proved fortuitous as all immigration records were destroyed making it impossible to determine which Chinese were in the United States illegally. For these newly created citizens, America now became a home instead of a prison.
This book contains 130 of the 200 Tangrenbu photographs in existence. Many of them have never been shown and a viewing makes it clear Genthe was enchanted with the innocence of children. He tended to take photos of special occasions in Chinatown, thus the ornate costuming in many of the prints. While Genthe did retouch some photos and erase objects from others, this does not detract from his body of work despite some fault finding by John Wei Tchen.
Genthe's photos are rich with the visual details of a bustling street life and of the affection shown by the Chinese for their families. This book provides a glimpse into a time and place long past and focuses a reader's attention on the plight of a unique people. After destruction of Old Chinatown, the Chinese embraced the 20th century. Occidental ways, dress, and customs transformed Little China from a forbidden section into a San Francisco tourist attraction.
This book lacks an index and one is sorely needed. Wei Tchen's extensive text adds enjoyment to the photgraphs as he illuminates each picture with revealing and fascinating comments. He has supplied chapter notes and these are very informative. The bibliography is limited and focuses on Genthe's volume of work and 19th century photography.
This books does an excellent job of stressing the importance of the Chinese people to the present day eminence of California and to the western states of America.

Shared History
By David Marxer
I must admit since my wife and I both have extended families living in Chinatown with which we stay on our many visits (staying in a hotel is a sin!) I have soft spot for these simple, occasionally crude, but powerful photographs. Seeing how our ancestors daily lived and knowing the racism and hatred they endured makes our problems seem trivial. To walk through the streets and alleys now, with these photographs forever in mind, grants us access to a vanished way of life.

Would recommend book as an historic photographic detail of San Francisco Chinatown BEFORE the April 17, 1906 Earthquake and Fire.

An amazing comprehensive read
By Aaron Martone
If I had to admit something about myself, it is that I don't find books to be an effective method of teaching for me, as that they are often written in such a way that I don't ever reach that 'Eureka' moment of comprehension and actually LEARN something about the subject matter. But I was determined to both learn and understand IIS on a more core level than I was at.

Simply put; this book is a a godsend! The authors write in a very structured and easy-to-consume manner that takes you step by step through concepts that are foundations to later chapters. This fills in the blanks I had for the HOW and allowed me to apply that learned logic to other areas of IIS quite successfully. The book is very thorough and delves into many areas that I have particular interest in (and previously, was lacking comprehension in). The examples given reiterate the subject matter and are thorough and easily understood, which aided the learning process.

I have a newfound sense of pride having already shown up many others who merely spoke a good game about IIS, but could never back up those words. I really wish all books were written this way. Not being anywhere near an 'avid' reader, I was surprised to find myself reading 8-9 chapters a day, but I honestly found the writing style to be very organized for both in-depth reading and quick scanning. A fantastic book, well worth the investment!

A scarce resource! Much better editing than the IIS 7 edition!
By Kurt Rayner
This is information that is hard to find. There are only two books available for IIS 7 development that I would even look at. The prior edition of this book is one of them, but the editing and code examples made it clear that the book was a piece-meal effort.

The IIS 8 edition is far more cohesive, well written and absolutely up to date!

If you are administering IIS, this will be helpful. If you are extending IIS manager or the schemas of IIS configuration, this book is indispensible.

I had the previous book on IIS 7.0 and didn't like it much but felt this one was much better written. Easy to read and lots of good info.

Dictionary of Ancient Magic Words and Spells: From Abraxas to Zoar, by Claude Lecouteux

A comprehensive handbook of more than 1,000 magical words, phrases, symbols, and secret alphabets

• Explains the origins, derivatives, and practical usage of each word, phrase, and spell as well as how they can be combined for custom spells

• Based on the magical traditions of Europe, Greece, and Egypt and recently discovered one-of-a-kind grimoires from Scandinavia, France, and Germany

• Includes an in-depth exploration of secret magical alphabets, including those based on Hebrew letters, Kabbalistic symbols, astrological signs, and runes

From Abracadabra to the now famous spells of the Harry Potter series, magic words are no longer confined to the practices of pagans, alchemists, witches, and occultists. They have become part of the popular imagination of the Western world. Passed down from ancient Babylon, Egypt, and Greece, these words and the rituals surrounding them have survived through the millennia because they work. And as scholar Claude Lecouteux reveals, often the more impenetrable they seem, the more effective they are.

Analyzing more than 7,000 spells from the magical traditions of Europe as well as the magical papyri of the Greeks and recently discovered one-of-a-kind grimoires from Scandinavia, France, and Germany, Lecouteux has compiled a comprehensive dictionary of ancient magic words, phrases, and spells along with an in-depth exploration--the first in English--of secret magical alphabets, including those based on Hebrew letters, Kabbalistic symbols, astrological signs, and runes. Drawing upon thousands of medieval accounts and famous manuscripts such as the Heptameron of Peter Abano, the author examines the origins of each word or spell, offering detailed instructions on their successful use, whether for protection, love, wealth, or healing. He charts their evolution and derivations through the centuries, showing, for example, how spells that were once intended to put out fires evolved to protect people from witchcraft. He reveals the inherent versatility of magic words and how each sorcerer or witch had a set of stock phrases they would combine to build a custom spell for the magical need at hand.

Presenting a wealth of material on magical words, signs, and charms, both common and obscure, Lecouteux also explores the magical words and spells of ancient Scandinavia, the Hispano-Arabic magic of Spain before the Reconquista, the traditions passed down from ancient Egypt, and those that have stayed in use until the present day.

Review
"Lecouteux has analyzed more than 7000 spells from numerous magical traditions. We find spells for protection, love, wealth and healing, with a charted evolution showing how a spell can morph down through the centuries. Presenting a wealth of material on magical words, signs and charms, Lecouteux also explores the magical words and spells of ancient Scandinavia, the Hispano-Arabic magic of Spain, the ancient Egyptian traditions and customs that have stayed in use until the present day." (The Witches’ Almanac, March 2016)

“The anything-but-dry presentation by Lecouteux makes this book a must-add for someone curating careful resources for magic work. This belongs on a shelf between that favorite, oft-used herbal and that collection of favorite spells. The history, illustrations, and above all the words themselves beg for a reintroduction into living use--although, word of warning, few of them are actually rated as valid in Scrabble.” (Facing North, Diana Rajchel, March 2016)

About the Author
Claude Lecouteux is a former professor of medieval literature and civilization at the Sorbonne. He is the author of numerous books on medieval and pagan beliefs and magic, including The Book of Grimoires, The Tradition of Household Spirits, A Lapidary of Sacred Stones, and The High Magic of Talismans and Amulets. PRAEMBULUS

From Abracadabra to the Avada Kedavra and Rennervate used in Harry Potter, everyone has become familiar with magic words; but novels, films, and comic books can provide only a simplified, distorted version of them. Shouted, whispered, chanted, recited, or muttered by a magician, wizard, or witch--using singular and even incomprehensible words to obtain supernatural effects--these perpetually evolving spells come down to us from the dawn of time. Thanks to the efforts of the scholars from a variety of disciplines, we now have a corpus consisting of tens of thousands of accounts at our disposal that can be found in charms, orisons, blessings, conjurations, and medical prescriptions.

THE USEFUL NATURE OF THE SPELLS

One of the purposes of magical phrases and words was the protection of people and property. It involved the prevention of something from happening or halting an action already at work.

Then there are the spells intended to grant one’s wishes. These range from desires for wealth--through the discovery of hidden treasures!--to catching fish, to winning the love of a person one lusts after. That the phrases may have been incomprehensible was of no importance as their use was based on an act of faith, relying first on the magic and authority of the text, then on the tradition. If they have been handed down, it is because they work, and the more impenetrable they seem, the more effective they are!

WRITING AND CODING

To write magic words or phrases, we are sometimes told it is necessary to use one’s own blood or that of animals--the most often cited animals are bats, cats (preferably black ones), roosters, and dogs.

Dictionary of Ancient Magic Words and Spells

From Abraxas to Zoar

Ablanathanalba: A word that means “You are our father,” endowed with magical properties and commonly used on Greek amulets and papyri. One on the collection of the National Library of France (n 177) depicts an armed spirit with serpents for legs and a rooster’s head over the palindrome Ablanathanalba on one side. On the opposite side there is a winged god standing on the back of a reclining lion with magical letters. This was all intended to protect the bearer from fear. A Greek papyrus or curse tablet dating from the second to fourth centuries places it at the top of a series of words arranged in a triangle that shrinks one letter every line: ablanathanalba; aeiou; iaebaphrenemoun; uoiea; akrammachamarei.

It can also be found in a Greek charm for obtaining victory in the phrase ABLANATHANALBA AKRAMMACHAMARI PEPHNA PHO’ZA PHNEBENNOUNI NAACHTHIP...OUNORBA.

A Coptic amulet on papyrus that may date from the fourth century, found in Egypt, bears this phrase: AKRAMMAHAMARIAABLANAPHANALBAA. On a gem intended to inspire love, Ablanathanalba is written in a circle around the first name, Faustina. A curse tablet found in Cypress shows the compound ABLANATHANALBASISOPETRON. On a phylactery discovered in Germany that was intended to protect several people, we read:

OYDAEAGANFOZL . . . UNI Ia Ia Iai Sabath Adnai Ablanathanlba Akra[machari Semeseilam Ssngembarpharangs, io io io

PGM XXXIII, 1-25; XXXVI, 211-30; D. G. Martinez, PMich 757: A Greek Love Charm from Egypt, Ann Arbor: Univ. of Michigan Press, 1991; A. Mastrocinque, “Metamorfosi di Kronos su una gemma di Bologna:” A. Mastrocinque (ed.) Gemme gnostiche e cultura ellenistica, Bologna, 2002, 118.

Abra: Word of a spell intended to provide protection against a dwarf who was believed to transmit illnesses. Abra Iesus, Alabra Iesus, Galabra Iesus. This phrase is preceded by the equally widespread thebal guttatim.

Berthouin-Mathieu, 155; Deonna, W., “Abra, Abraca. La croix talisman de Lausanne,” Geneva 22 (1944), 115–37.

AB : RA : CA D.A: --B. R: A.: To chase away a cold fever, these words are written on a piece of bread that is then given to the patient to eat. The letters form the word Abracadabra!

Abracula/Abraculus: A word featured in a reductive phrase intended to cure fever. It should be written on a note to be worn around the neck. It appears in a wide variety of ways in the manuscripts.

In depth exploration
By Daniel E.
I'm a little biased because I have all of the books from this author that have been translated and am a huge fan of his work. This is a very informative and thorough book on the subject. You won't go wrong.

Thorough beyond expectation
By Doug Chango
Claude Lecouteux's "Dictionary of Ancient Magic Words and Spells", proved to be a fairly academic collection of charms and spells from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century. Collected from various European, Asian, and African sources, the reader is able to catch a glimpse at what magic and medicine were like in "the old days". Arranged by the spell characters themselves, the reader won't be able to crack this open and look up Medevil love spells, but browsing the text provides an idea at the simplicity and complexity of magic. Another much appreciated insight in the book is the examples of prayers and blessings used as medicine calling on God, Jesus, and the Virgin Mary as well as other heavenly entities showing that once upon a time magic was not limited to the pagans and heathens. The only downside I saw in this text is the Praeambulus; Briefly talking about things like "Paganism and Christianity" and "Rituals and Ingredients", the author wrote academically as if the reader comes to the subject with knowledge and I felt there were holes for someone who has no prior academic study of the subjects at hand.

Overall, this dictionary is a must add to any metaphysical/occult library. The bibliography alone is worth the cost of the book.

Redundant and unnecessary bs!!!!
By TRUEBOOKLOVER
Terrible! This book is quite redundant. There are lots of words that are used for the same exact thing over and over again. It gives u at least 100 words for fevers.....to top it off, there is nothing in this book pertaining to prosperity, wealth, or empowerment. If u constantly have fevers and headaches, then this is perfect for u, otherwise u should run the other way and don't look back.
