About the Author

J. Dan Rothwell is chair of the Communication Studies Department at Cabrillo College. Dr. Rothwell has received numerous teaching awards, including among others: the 2010 "Ernest L. Boyer International Award for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Technology"; the 2010 Cabrillo College "Innovative Teacher of the Year"; the 2011 National Communication Association "Community College Educator of the Year" award; and a 2012 official resolution by the California State Senate acknowledging Dr. Rothwell's excellence in teaching. Also in 2012, the Western States Communication Association awarded the Cabrillo College Communication Studies department, under the leadership of Dr. Rothwell, the "Model Communication Studies" award.

Not Loving this Textbook

I am taking a public speaking course that is using this textbook. As a quick read, this textbook would probably be excellent. As the core material for a college-level class, however, it falls flat. It is conversational, yet poorly organized. Key points, vocabulary, terms, and solutions are hidden within paragraphs, not outlined or highlighted well. The chapter on outlining is located 7 chapters into the book. And the worst part are the canned quizzes and tests. They are filled with poorly-written questions such as True-False questions that contain some accurate facts provided in the text but not completely accurate, so they are false. In other words, instead of being a tool to aid in learning the material, the quizzes and tests provide a source of stress and frustration for students. Oh, and if the professor is using the included PowerPoint presentation but doesn't know the material well, it is useless and confusing.

I am having to re-do the powerpoints. Who ever put it together did it mindlessly. His book is written along the same pathway as "In Mixed Company" . I have to use it for Group Communication and I find his concepts are not organized and well written out. NOW I have to use this book for Public Speaking and I am baffled in how to follow his process. The topic ideas are jumbeld and again I am having to somehow manage my way through this mess. I am not sure why our organization felt this book was even comprable to "Mastering Public Speaking" By George Grice, and John Skinner. I know books can be expensive but to subject students to poorly written work just to save a buck makes not sense to me.

Excellent book! really helped me with my public speaking class in college! Fun dialogue with very useful information. Filled with a lot of great ideas and advice, especially on combating speech anxiety. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in improving your public speaking skills!

Ballesteros's vibrant and child-friendly art bursts off the page, sometimes overcrowding the tableau in a way that marries well with the partylike atmosphere. Mexican cultural references are made throughout, including cameos by Frida Kahlo, La Llorona, and the recently deceased Mexican actress and comedian Maria Elena Velasco, best known for her character La India Maria. The skeleton images made popular by Mexican artist Jos� Guadalupe Posada are also prevalent in each spread, but these almost jolly figures won't frighten young readers. About the Author
Roseanne Greenfield Thong was born in California, but lived abroad for 18 years (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Guatemala and Mexico). Her multicultural children's books have received international recognition in the Hispanic and Asian communities. Her book, Green Is a Chile Pepper was a 2015 Pura Belpre honor book.

Carles Ballesteros was born near Barcelona, Spain. He now lives in Chile, where he teaches art classes and illustrates picture books and greeting cards.

Already a treasured part of my home library

I first experienced Dia de los Muertos at Hollywood Forever last year. I left impressed with the love, tenderness and humor with which people reflected on their loved ones passed. I've been looking forward to experiencing the holiday--in this small way--again this year.

I was thrilled when I saw this book at the bookstore a couple weeks ago. I bought it after reading one page, thinking I'd be happy to share it with my kids if it were reasonably thoughtful and entertaining. I'd like my kids to know a little more about the holiday and see how it fits into life throughout the year; finding something geared more toward them thrilled me, whether it was a mediocre read or a purely delightful one!

It was nowhere near a mediocre read. I loved it on my first read, and more on my second. I love how it explains the holiday so accessibly, and with such beautiful pictures. My toddler, who ignores most books (favoring reading the same four over and over), was captivated by the lovely illustrations. I've read this book to my kids every day since we brought it home, and plan on continuing to read it. It's so loving, so affirming, in its explanation, and concludes so sweetly I can't help but smile. This was all the more so when my older child (almost six) asked me what it meant, opening up a lovely discussion.

I've only had this book for two weeks, but I imagine I'll feel every bit as enamored of it in a year, two years, or ten.

Unique art and catchy rhymes

A catchy rhyme interspersed with Spanish words teaches children about the Dia de Los Muertos and its traditions. I can quite easily see little ones wanting this read repeatedly, since the rhythm of the verse is so catchy. The artwork is simple almost entirely flat shapes and colors, but there are so many tiny details that you'll forget that everything is so simplistic. It's a nice style, which I haven't seen in any Spanish-language children's books as of yet.

The only complaint I have about this book is that some of the Spanish vocabulary isn't immediately obvious. Yes, there's a glossary of Spanish terms at the end, but you won't want to leaf back and forth while reading, and kids are unlikely to want to read just a glossary after the rest of the book. So I'd say look up the terms before reading this to your kids so you can explain the few words which they might not understand.

Don't feel the need to run out and buy this without trying it from your local library, first, but feel free to give it a shot!

An insightful and inspiration account...

This sensitively researched account of how everyday women in conflict affected societies work to effect positive peace, remains one of my favourite books on this topic. It presents three case studies drawing from women's experiences in Northern Ireland, Israel/Palestine and Bosinia/Hercegovina. These case studies are important because they form part of a small (but growing) body of literature that portrays women's particular views on both war and peace. Also it presents cross-cultural perspectives- Cockburn does not fall into the trap of conflating these women's experiences and views into one "feminine" experience/voice. Instead, under the theme of "women and peace", the author explores the diversity and commonality which forms these women's approaches to peace in societies that often do not include women in formal peace processes. For anyone interested in the efforts of civil society to effect peace and social justice, or anyone with an interest in women's roles in war and peace, this is an excellent book.

The speed at which Zo� goes from reading a few racy BDSM novels to being a full-blown submissive is almost instantaneous. Dylan pushes Zo� because he believes that deep inside she craves his dominance. In my opinion this is not only hard to believe, but incredibly unsafe. What I like most is that he is the one who learns what it feels like to truly have love and trust in a D/s relationship.

True to form, Claire Thompson shines.

Having been an active member of the BDSM community since 1991, I first would like to say that it is so refreshing to be able to purchase erotica in American bookstores. At the time I was introduced to the community, I was managing a bookstore and in graduate school at the same time. I remember having to special order erotica from Black Lace (a publisher based in London) because American publishing houses thought it too risque for American audiences. How times have changed.

Claire Thompson was the first American author I read ("Sarah's Surrender" was her first book as well as the first I'd read by her and now the name has been changed to "Sarah's Awakening") and I immediately fell in love with Ms Thompson's writing. She knew what it was like to actually BE a submissive. Those of us who are members of the community can always spot an author who's writing is just a rehash of a book or film this person has seen. Claire Thompson knows what feelings and emotions submissives experience during a scene and I can't appreciate that enough.

I realize this isn't so much of a review of "Brokered Submission" (which is fantastic), but a testament to Ms Thompson's skill as a writer as well as the honest portrayal of a submissive in her novels. I thank her here and I have thanked her via our correspondence. She definitely is one of a kind. She and her colleague, Jaid Black (the brains behind Ellora's Cave - one of the first erotic publishing companies in America) are the real deal...and this is coming from someone who is also the real deal. And to all of those doubters that think this sort of relationship is somehow empty and will come to no good end: I married my Dom, who is also my best friend, confidante, my rock.

Thank you, Ms Thompson, Ms Black and all of the other true submissives, switches, Doms and Dommes who share their stories with the rest of us.

Delightful book

When I am in the mood for something super dark I always turn to Claire Thompson. So I was super excited to see that she had a new release. Well Brokered Submission turned out to be pretty tame for Ms. Thompson's standards but I still enjoyed the book very much. It was a surprisingly informative book about the BDSM lifestyle and if you have ever had any questions or doubts about why someone would enjoy this lifestyle, then this book will help you understand. And if you thought that subs were weak, and had no control over the situation, then Brokered Submission will show you the error of your ways. Zoe is an intelligent, capable, strong woman who is certainly not weakened by her submission. Dylan is a loving and caring Dom who has only his sub's needs in mine. I really love both of these characters. The story flows easily and naturally. Another enjoyable read from Ms. Thompson.
