American Indian Healing Arts: Herbs, Rituals, and Remedies for Every Season of Life, by E. Barrie Kavasch, Karen Baar

American Indian Healing Arts is a magical blend of plant lore, history, and living tradition that draws on a lifetime of study with native healers by herbalist and ethnobotanist E. Barrie Kavasch.

Here are the time-honored tribal rituals performed to promote good health, heal illness, and bring mind and spirit into harmony with nature. Here also are dozens of safe, effective earth remedies--many of which are now being confirmed by modern research.

Each chapter introduces a new stage in the life cycle, from the delightful Navajo First Smile Ceremony (welcoming a new baby) to the Apache Sunrise Ceremony (celebrating puberty) to the Seminole Old People's Dance.

At the heart of the book are more than sixty easy-to-use herbal remedies--including soothing rubs for baby, a yucca face mask for troubled skin, relaxing teas, massage oils, natural insect repellents, and fragrant smudge sticks. There are also guidelines for assembling a basic American Indian medicine chest.

Amazon.com Review
Throughout their history, the American Indians have healed with rituals using herbs, fungi, and other natural materials. They have valued as sacred the spiritual side of life and their connection to the earth. Their medicine has always been holistic, treating the body and spirit as one and illness as a sign of imbalance. Now we can benefit from American Indian wisdom with American Indian Healing Arts: Herbs, Rituals, and Remedies for Every Season of Life. This book is organized by the stages of life, presenting different tribal perspectives on the significance of each, with ceremonies and healing rituals (songs, prayers, botanicals). The book includes more than 60 recipes for treating health problems and other needs, from "cramp bark tea" to "marigold-calendula deodorant cream." There are also directions for making tonics, ointments, tooth powders, and digestive remedies, and illustrations consisting of leaf-rubbings of 80 plants. Besides learning to use American Indian remedies, you learn fascinating facts about their ceremonies. The Navajo celebrate not only birth, but the infant's first smile and first laugh, for example. An Apache girl celebrates first menstruation by running and dancing for four days (guided and massaged by an elder woman). If you're interested in alternative healing, or intrigued by American Indian culture, this book will add to your knowledge. --Joan Price

From Booklist
Increased interest in complementary healing methods has provoked a flurry of books on Asian traditions, especially those of China and India. America has its own healing traditions, though--the herbal medicines and rituals of the Indian nations. This comprehensive volume includes the traditions of many peoples, such as the spidery dream catcher of the Algonquin and the Cree, the Cheyenne's sacred arrow blessing, and the Iroquois' winter solstice dances. That in itself would make this accessible, engaging book a good choice for libraries where interest in the healing arts is high, and its impressive collection of herbal remedies, all employing American wild plants, only increases its appeal. Digestive tea made from bergamot (bee balm), insect repellent from sassafras, hair conditioner from the soap plant, deodorant from calendula and marigold--recipes for these and many more useful substances distinguish this well-conceived and executed book. Patricia Monaghan

From Kirkus Reviews
The history and practice of traditional healing arts used by various Native American tribes, aptly set in a cultural framework that provides a fuller understanding of how such customs arose. Kavasch, an herbalist and ethnobotanist (Native Harvests: Recipes and Botanicals of the American Indian, 1979) and health writer Baar are convinced that the healing rituals and native medicinal plants described here are an untapped reservoir of help . Kavasch explains that Native American healing is focused on both spiritual and physical health, and is based on a connection with community and with the earth. Much of the tradition is organized around the cycles of life; thus the authors arrange their information by ``Birth and Infancy,'' ``Childhood,'' ``Puberty,'' ``Adolescence,'' ``Adulthood,'' ``Old Age,'' and ``Death, the Afterlife, and the Spirit World.'' A final chapter, ``An American Indian Medicine Chest,'' (``gifts from Mother Earth'') details recipes for the remedies discussed. The material, drawn from practices of many tribes, is intriguing and instinctively appealing: ``During old age, medications, illnesses, and other conditions can affect the senses of smell and taste . . . American Indians long used restoratives such as American ginseng, American ginger, sarsaparilla, sassafras, black birch, sweet fern . . . to raise body heat, stimulate appetite and metabolism, and aid digestion. Readers looking for treatments should heed the authors' cautions and look for help from health professionals and healers trained in the use of these medicaments; but for a history, an appreciation, and a suggestion of possibilities, this guide is a find. Using examples and stories relevant for today, and with great sensitivity to modern challenges to religious faith, he explains the essentials of spiritual life, including the importance of community worship, the imperatives surrounding social action, and the centrality of the Incarnation, to outline a Christian spirituality that reflects the yearning and search for meaning at the core of the human experience.

Amazon.com Review
"Long before we do anything explicitly religious at all, we have to do something about the fire that burns within us," writes Ronald Rolheiser. "What we do with that fire, how we channel it, is our spirituality." From the opening chapter, where Rolheiser eloquently compares the burning spiritual fire of Mother Teresa, Janice Joplin, and Princess Diana, readers will be fully engaged in a unique and altogether fascinating discussion of Christian spirituality.

As a regular columnist for the Catholic Herald, Rolheiser has clearly honed his writing skills. Like an eloquent marriage counselor, he deftly tries to reconcile the rift between contemporary spirituality and Christianity. For example, he points to the four pillars that support a healthy marriage of Christianity and spirituality, which are "Private prayer and private morality. Social justice. Mellowness of heart and spirit. Community as a constitutive element of true worship." Building upon these pillars, Rolheiser delves into the more challenging marital tensions with chapters such as "Christ as the Basis for Christian Spirituality" and a "Spirituality of Sexuality." This is an excellent book for any Christian who has longs to create a more holy and lasting spiritual union. --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
"Spirituality is about what we do with our unrest... [it] is about what we do with that incurable desire, the madness that comes from the gods, within us." Rolheiser (Restless Heart) contends that the late 20th century is marked by a kind of spiritual restlessness, even though the spiritual landscape is littered with a variety of "spiritualities." He argues that there is richness in such spiritual diversity and plurality, but that many seekers lack direction in their spiritual search. Rolheiser develops a Christian spirituality that he believes offers some definite direction for seekers. At the heart of a healthy Christian spiritual life, he says, there must be four essentials: "private prayer and private morality; social justice; mellowness of heart and spirit; and community as a constitutive element of true worship." At the base of Christian spirituality, he notes, is the Incarnation of God in human flesh. If Christians can focus on the embodied character of their theology, then the four essentials of Christian spirituality become easier to embrace. In the latter half of the book, Rolheiser develops sketches of a spirituality of community (ecclesiology), a spirituality of sexuality and a spirituality of justice and peacemaking. We can sustain ourselves in the spiritual life, he notes, by being a mystic, sinning bravely, gathering ritually around the Word and breaking the bread, and worshipping and serving the right God. Rolheiser's program for Christian spirituality is reminiscent of the best work of Henri Nouwen and Daniel Berrigan. (July)

From Library Journal
This book tries to be a guidebook of sorts for those who have found Christianity less than palatable. Rolheiser, a popular columnist for the Catholic Herald and author of several books (e.g., Against an Infinite Horizon, Crossroad, 1996), teaches the meaning of Christian spirituality and how to apply it. He tackles belief in the Incarnation, community worship, social action, and sustaining spirituality in daily life, using formidable substance, good sense, and compelling anecdotes to reach the everyday person. Though aimed at Christians, Rolheiser's spiritual lessons are stripped to their essentials with sensitivity to various traditions. Public libraries staying current in contemporary spirituality will want to add this title, as will those aiming to keep their shelves stocked with popular religious dialog.ALeroy Hommerding, Citrus Cty. Reconnecting with spirituality
By Jon Wergin
I am a former Christian and have been on a spiritual journey for some time. I have been looking for a way to redefine my faith, to recommit to at least some of the Christian tenets I rejected years ago. Nothing I read helped me; authors (including C.S. Lewis, among others) all seem to assume that their readers share their faith. But in Rolheiser's book his first line says it all: "This is a book for you if you are struggling spiritually." I was struggling before I read the book, and I still am, but Rolheiser has helped me understand what the struggle is about. This is a book that can be read with benefit by believers and nonbelievers alike.

Inspiration for the new millennium
By A Customer
This is the most inspirational--and challenging--book I've read in this or any year. This book is full of practical advice for increasing the spirituality of both the individual and the church. While Rolheiser is a Catholic priest, the issues he discusses are relevant to all Christians. His ideas on the concept of community I found especially thought-provoking with regard both to church and family. They provide useful ways of maintaining the focus on God even in the loud, messy chaos of everyday life and for worshipping with a community of believers, all of which you might not choose to associate with in other circumstances. Rolheiser's chapter on Christian sexuality as energy can be inspirational for both single individuals and those who are married or in other relationships. I would highly recommend this book for individual study or group discussion among thoughtful Christians of all denominations.

Best Book on Catholic Spirituality in 10 Years...
By A Customer
Rolheiser does an amazing job of taking the reader on a journey of spirituality. He carefully crafted the book to help the reader understand the fundamentals of a solid Christian spirituality. Though clearly written from a Roman Catholic perspective, the writing and insight is so helpful that any Christian would benefit from it. This book will truly help one's reach expand his grasp spiritually.
The man who recommended this to me is brilliant for recognizing it as the best book on Catholic spirituality he had read in the last ten years.
This is the kind of book that starts great discussion groups and leads them to the formation of a community.

Who Censored Roger Rabbit?, by Gary K Wolf

“Who’d want to kill a dumb cartoon bunny?” That’s what Eddie Valiant wants to know. He’s the toughest private eye in Los Angeles, and he’ll handle anything – if you’re human. If you’re a Toon, that’s another story. Eddie doesn’t like Toons – those cartoon characters who live side-by-side with humans. Not the way they look, and especially not the way they talk: word-filled balloons come out of their mouths and then disintegrate, leaving dust all over his rug. Eddie will work for a Toon if his cash supply is low enough. So he reluctantly agrees when Roger Rabbit, a Toon who plays straight man (or should that be straight rabbit) in the Baby Herman cartoon series, asks him to find out who’s been trying – unsuccessfully – to buy his contract from the DeGreasy Brothers syndicate. Then Rocco DeGreasy is murdered – and Roger is the prime suspect! The rabbit is also, as Eddie soon discovers, very, very dead. Who censored Roger Rabbit? And who shot Rocco DeGreasy? Was it Roger, or was it Rocco’s hot-cha-cha girlfriend, Jessica Rabbit? Why had Jessica – a pretty steamy number for a Toon – ever married a dopey bunny in the first place? And why does everybody want Roger’s battered old teakettle? As Eddie combs L.A. from the executive suites of the DeGreasy Brothers to Sid Sleaze’s porno comic studio, he uncovers art thefts, blackmail plots….and the cagiest killer he’s ever faced. In Who Censored Roger Rabbit?, author Gary K. Wolf has created a wonderfully skewed – and totally believable – world compounded of equal parts Raymond Chandler, Lewis Carroll, and Walt Disney. This riotously surreal spoof of the hard-boiled detective novel is packed with action and laughs. From first page to last, Who Censored Roger Rabbit? is shear delight. Celebrated author Gary K. Wolf’s cult classic and highly praised novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit? is the basis for the blockbuster Walt Disney/Steven Spielberg Academy Award winning film Who Framed Roger Rabbit. This version includes an author’s sketch of Roger Rabbit PLUS autographs of Gary K. Wolf AND Roger Rabbit himself! The detective on the cover is portrayed by Mr. Wolf.

This antic mystery, in a tradition -- and on a terrain -- familiar to fans of Raymond Chandler and Ross Macdonald, amuses as it intrigues.

An impressively sustained, original mix of fairy tale and burlesque ... Wacky!
 Publishers Weekly

A decidedly different and thoroughly enjoyable piece of fiction. Highly recommended.
 Roanoke Times and World News

It's fun. And crazy. And it works. Gary K. Wolf has created a fast-moving send up of the classic trench coat thriller, turned the world 90 degrees to left and then stirred in the barnyard beasties of the comic pages. The action stays frantic. Wolf creates a world wacky and real enough to keep you turning the page.
 Long Beach Independent Press Telegram

The style is a well-oiled version of Raymond Chandler, and characters are about what one would expect if Daffy Duck were to become the producer of "Wild Kingdom". Hilarious.
 Kansas City Star

The ultimate tongue-in-cheek burlesque of the typical hard-boiled private eye thriller. Who Censored Roger Rabbit? stands with the true detective epics of the '30s and '40s.
 Jacksonville Times Union

A wild, wacky and highly original story which never has a dull moment.

Wolf's writing is genuinely funny. His characters wander around in a Chandleresque Disneyland of comic violence that is surreal without being unrealistic. He also trots out every clich imaginable in the detective/mystery genre, and milks them for every laugh, or groan, that he can get.

About the Author
It was watching Saturday morning cartoons "for research purposes" that inspired Wolf's idea for Roger Rabbit.

"It was during the commercials," says Wolf. "I saw Tony the Tiger and the Trix Rabbit, and Cap'n Crunch, cartoon characters, talking to real people. And nobody seemed to think that was odd. I thought, 'What a great idea for a novel. A place where Toons lived side by side with humans.' I wove that into a mystery, and bingo, I had my book."

His innovative concept was the basis for the novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit? Wolf found his idea hard to sell -- this time to publishers. Even with three well reviewed science fiction novels to his credit, it took Wolf two years and 110 rejections to find a publisher for his unusual book. "Publishers told me it was too esoteric. Too weird. Nobody would understand it," Wolf explains. Finally, a small publisher took a chance and brought it out. Soon after, Walt Disney Pictures came calling. Disney and Steven Spielberg teamed up to make Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The film became the most critically acclaimed and highest-grossing film of 1988, bringing in more than $750 million at the box office as well as four Academy Awards.

Wolf has written ten novels.

He currently lives in Boston.

Darker than the film
By Marshall Lord
This is the cult classic which inspired the film "Who framed Roger Rabbit" but the original book is much darker and more adult in tone than the film - and in spite of the fact that half the characters are "toons," much less cartoonish.

This is set in an alternative Hollywood in which cartoon characters or "toons" are real. Unlike the film however, they are neither industructible nor immortal. In the book, a toon can generate a temporary "doppelganger" duplicate of himself or herself, and these expendable copies are used as stunt doubles for all the dangerous or lethal work in films. A toon in this book who is hit by a bullet will die just as easily as a human.

The narrator and central character is P.I. Eddie Valiant - Bob Hoskin's character in the film. Other characters who were translated recognisably to the film from the book include cartoon comedy star Roger Rabbit, his humanoid toon wife Jessica Rabbit, and toon star Baby Herman.

As in the film, Eddie Valiant is hired by Roger Rabbit for a number of reasons including marital problems - in the book his beautiful wife Jessica has left him for his agent, Rocco DeGreasy. Roger wants her back, and believes Rocco has put pressure on her to leave him. At first he seems to be talking nonsense.

But a few chapters into the book, both Roger and Rocco are murdered. The police - human and toon divisions - think Roger killed his agent and Jessica murdered him in revenge. Shortly before he died Roger Rabbit created a doppelganger; this double persuades Eddie Valiant to look for evidence that both Jessica and his late self were innocent of the murders.

Eddie sets out to clear Roger and Jessica - with zany results.

A clever black comedy - well worth a read. The film was technically brilliant, but this original is a much cleverer story.

I want a Roger reboot
By Lee
I was pleasantly surprised to find this book for my Kindle as I've been curious to read it since I learned of its existence, but while I enjoyed it, I can see why it has remained out of print even though it inspired a well-known movie - it's not for the same audience as the movie. The audience for the movie were probably similar to the Pixar crowd nowadays - in search of enough movement and colour to keep very young kids interested yet also requiring enough subtlety and sophistication to engage the parents. But it's hard to say who Gary Wolf was writing for - fans of hard boiled crime fiction who also have the ability to completely suspend their disbelief? I say "completely" because even when you accept a world where comic strip characters are real, talk in speech balloons, and are photographed to create comics, it does not really prepare you for the plot device used to resolve the mystery - it's one of those endings that leaves you feeling the story did not play by its own rules. It's possible the unlikely plot twists and strained metaphors ("I sank a well into my bottom drawer, and struck more bourbon") are deliberately over the top for the sake of humour, but whether the joke holds up for the length of a short novel depends on your taste.

Even so, I give it a high rating because I did enjoy its uncompromisingly darker tone. No "dip" is required to dispatch toons; they get shot dead and bleed. In this version of the story Jessica Rabbit really is "bad", not just "drawn that way" and unlike in the movie there is no need to mess around with freeze frame to see her without her underwear. While Roger himself has some of the same overly helpful, goofy nature that was a big part of his personality in the movie, he also manages to solve elements of the case on his own, makes allusions to Socrates, solves chess problems and like all the other characters in the book, seems to be hiding something.

I've read about on-again, off-again plans for a sequel to the movie, and given the current trend towards going back to the roots of a series and creating reboots and re imaginings rather than straight sequels, it would be very interesting to see someone forget trying to compete with the latest Disney/Pixar masterpiece and create a mature audience Roger Rabbit that stayed closer to the book, maybe with a better ending but still aiming for a niche market of adults who grew up with Roger and are ready for a darker, more complex story.

One can dream.

A rare case where the film was better
By Michael Scott
Caveat emptor: aside from the story setting -- a world in which humans and Toons coexist in the real world -- and a handful of character names, this book has pretty much nothing to do with the film WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT?

The book is not particularly well-written. It's not awful, but it's just not very good. The majority of it goes like this: our detective narrator, Eddie Valiant, gets Character 1's side of the story. He then goes to Character 2 and repeats this story to them. Character 2 balks and tells him a different version of the story. Valiant returns to Character 1, reviews the story as Character 1 told it and then tells Character 1 what Character 2 had to say about all this and this happens over and over again, getting pretty tedious after a while. Wolf/Valiant never skip past with a "I told him the information I got from the girl," it's always reiterated in complete detail. The book could probably be cut by half just by removing overly redundant detail, but then I guess we wouldn't get all the descriptions of what the Toons' word bubbles look like. (In this version, the Toons are comic strip Toons, not movie Toons.)

Valiant is a pushover -- he'll believe whatever anyone says to him until someone else contradicts it, and then he'll believe THEM at face value until further notice. This would be funny if it were being played that way, with Valiant being a too-nice poseur of a P.I., but the book seems to think it's presenting him as being appropriately hardnosed. Several times it's noted that he is a former Marine and he's constantly drinking some kind of alcoholic beverage -- in a world where Toons are living breathing creatures, it's a little sad that the author seems to have spent the bulk of his creative efforts in coming up with a new metaphor to describe Valiant taking a drink every time he does so.

There's an attempt to make humans vs. Toons some kind of racial allegory. Their police forces are segregated, with humans handling human cases and Toons handling Toons exclusively, and there's a brief and pointless scene where Eddie's weekly poker game bails on him when Roger shows up ("That was the deal: no women and no Toons"). But this is never really explored, or much utilized, it's just kind of a superficial gloss over the proceedings. Eddie is clearly different because he doesn't mind Toons as much, but the book never goes into why, just occasionally pats him on the head for being such a good guy on the inside.

The plot is kind of all over the place and contains no fewer than three flagrant deus ex machinas in the third act. The formatting was decent in the Kindle edition but there were some OCR errors and a new character's dialogue does not always start a new paragraph. The characters don't have distinct voices and it can be momentarily confusing, and when this happens repeatedly over the course of the entire book, it becomes a little aggravating.

I give it one star for being readable, another star for a great concept, and a third star for inspiring a film that did a much better job of leveraging the concept and its opportunities. It's $2, so it's not a big financial loss if you get curious and pick it up, but you could probably find better things to do with your time.

An Incredibly Vivid Dystopia
By Ana Mardoll
Invitation to the Game / 0-671-86692-3

I read this book as a little girl and spent the next ten years looking for it in book stores because it stuck with me so strongly.

"Invitation to the Game" is in some ways standard science fiction fare: the earth is overcrowded with unemployed people, none of whom can find a job because robots can accomplish most tasks more cheaply and efficiently than humans can. When a group of young adults are dumped directly out of their high school graduation into the government run slums to "enjoy their leisure years" as unemployed adults, they despair that they will ever be happy again. Their "leisure years" are anything but, as they stave off simultaneously crippling boredom and the perils of extreme poverty in their "Designated Area" where gangs roam free at night and the other unemployed adults party themselves into an eternal stupor to dull the pain.

When a mysterious organization offers the group a chance to participate in a virtual reality game for a mysterious prize, they leap at the chance, anxious to do anything to brighten their existence and bring meaning to their lives. Yet as the year goes by and their visits to the gaming center become more frequent, they speculate as to the true motives of this organization and what the real meaning of "The Game" truly is.

"Invitation to the Game" is a fascinating exploration of a future where inertia prevents the necessary changes to society that are so terribly needed, and where brilliant young minds are in danger of being wasted in order to allow the system to continue unchallenged. This is not "action scifi" - much of the book is devoted to daily scrounging and survival without the help of adults (a sort of futuristic "Boxcar Children", if you will) and to periods of discussion over the nature of society and their own uncertain fates and futures. Hughes does a remarkable job moving the story as a fast clip, and her contrasting drab future society and vibrant virtual reality escape are wonders to behold.

While the story sounds depressing and frightening, the Hughes maintains a light touch, providing nurturers among the group to act as a surrogate mother and father, and the young adults are remarkably self-sufficient and dedicated - teaching themselves karate and instituting a fun and healthy exercise regimen to protect themselves both within and without "The Game". While their world has hardships and privations, these are seen as challenges to be overcome rather than impossible burdens. While the individual members of this thrown-together group often do not get along, they nevertheless learn to respect each other and they solve conflicts realistically. The end result is that the reader relishes in their small victories and the privations of the world around them only make the victories that much sweeter. And when the prize of "The Game" is revealed, we see that the solution to their problems is both bitter-sweet and exquisite.

Predictable yet refreshing
By Gard E Abrahamsen
I first picked up Invitation to the Game by Monica Hughes during my 1997 bicycle trip from Montreal to Toronto. A local museum was having a fund raising used book street sale, and I picked this book up for [a song]. It took me until now to actually pick it up and read it.
While the book is quite fitting for early-teen readers, I might have been stretching it a bit at the age of 29, as I found the book quite predictable. On several occasions I wanted to grab hold of the characters and shake some sense in them. "What are you thinking? Are you dense or what?" Since I could not do this, I just had to suffer my way through twenty more pages before the characters caught up with the obvious.
That being said, I did not realize the end of the book from the beginning, but only through the last 3 chapters. And apart from the last chapter, which was too sweet for my dentist to approve, the conclusion was quite refreshing for a children's book.

Invitation to the Game
By A Customer
This book was very interesting, because of its ideas on where our world is heading. In the year 2154, the government controls everything. They decide what you do and where you live. Most people, found themselves unemployed and restricted to a designated area (DA). Now, nine unemployed young adults, right out of a government school, must work together to survive their DA. At first, they have trouble getting along and finding things to do. Then they stumble on something that will change their lives, "The Game." They're not sure what to make of it at first, but that it's a simulated paradise where they are to look for clues or answers to the game so they can receive the prize of their desire. But what do they truly desire? I gave this book four stars because it was a little slow, but mostly it was very fascinating science fiction story on the future.
