About the Author
David Batchelor is Senior Tutor in Critical Theory at the Royal College of Art, London. He is also the author of "Minimalism" (1997).


Charles Harrison is Professor of History and Theory of Art and Staff Tutor in Arts at the Open University. He is the author of numerous books on modern art criticism and art theory.

Paul Wood is Senior Lecturer in Art History at the Open University. He is co-editor, with Charles Harrison and Jason Gaiger, of "Art in Theory 1648-1815" (2001) and "Art in Theory 1815-1900" (1998).

Briony Fer, reader in history of art at University College London, is also the author of "On Abstract Art, "published by Yale University Press.

The central theme of this book is the interaction between the curvature of a complete Riemannian manifold and its topology and global geometry. The first five chapters are preparatory in nature. They begin with a very concise introduction to Riemannian geometry, followed by an exposition of Toponogov's theorem--the first such treatment in a book in English. Next comes a detailed presentation of homogeneous spaces in which the main goal is to find formulas for their curvature. A quick chapter of Morse theory is followed by one on the injectivity radius. Chapters 6-9 deal with many of the most relevant contributions to the subject in the years 1959 to 1974. These include the pinching (or sphere) theorem, Berger's theorem for symmetric spaces, the differentiable sphere theorem, the structure of complete manifolds of non-negative curvature, and finally, results about the structure of complete manifolds of non-positive curvature. Emphasis is given to the phenomenon of rigidity, namely, the fact that although the conclusions which hold under the assumption of some strict inequality on curvature can fail when the strict inequality on curvature can fail when the strict inequality is relaxed to a weak one, the failure can happen only in a restricted way, which can usually be classified up to isometry. Much of the material, particularly the last four chapters, was essentially state-of-the-art when the book first appeared in 1975. Since then, the subject has exploded, but the material covered in the book still represents an essential prerequisite for anyone who wants to work in the field.

Geometry implies topology. Discuss.

This book summarizes the 1975 state of the art regarding global topological consequences of bounds on sectional curvature. The inside back cover summarizes the book very well indeed. The Amazon "Book description" is copied from there. Just read that. It's an honest summary.

The book "Comparison Theorems in Riemannian Geometry", by Cheeger and Ebin, is for researchers at the postgraduate, postdoctoral and professional levels. In view of the 1975 vintage, it has great value as a relatively easy introduction to the research project "geometry implies topology" for Riemannian spaces, but also to better understand the current state of the art in the context of its historical development. More recent summaries, such as the 1994 "Lectures on Differential Geometry" by Schoen and Yau, can be quite overwhelming. It's better to read up on earlier research results first to see the context in which later researchers worked.

The Cheeger/Ebin book is widely cited in later research. So it's an essential reference if you're serious about researching the flavour of differential geometry which seeks to put constraints on topology in terms of given bounds on curvature. The design of the book is well thought out and implemented. There are not many modern books on DG at this level which make so much effort to be comprehensible to the beginner. It even has lots of nice diagrams!

all you ever wanted to know about differential geometry

But thought the book was out of print. This classic book was published by North Holland in the late seventies, was photocopied by every grad student in geometry, and finally has been reprinted by the American Math Society. The book's goal (achieved) is to get you up to speed and working as quickly as possible. Riemannian geometry is covered from scratch (a la Milnor's Morse Theory (Annals of Mathematic Studies AM-51) but they don't stop there, and prove all of the basic comparison results.

Many errors that are not in the original edition

This review only applies to the AMS Chelsea edition. I'm in graduate school and working through this with a few other students who are using the original edition that they got from the library. There are NUMEROUS errors in this edition that are not in the original. There were three on a single page in a section I was reading today. If you can avoid buying this edition, do it.

It reads like a true Manchester history book... An alternative one though :-) It is impossible to grasp what they got up to in the 80s etc... Tells the story of the writer how he grew up in Manchester, got involved in football, stealing, robbing, party around the UK and Europe... As well as the drug abuse.

Good biography for kids...

my son needed a book about "a real person who contributed something to society" for a book report. i suggested steve jobs because my son is learning so much about the computer. well... he read a chapter or two and took a "break." so i picked it up and read it in about a half an hour. it was very interesting. as an adult, i enjoyed it. i would never have the time to read an "adult" biography about jobs. my son ended up reading it all in a second sitting. i would recommended this book for elementary students (and their parents). **smile**

Cross-linked polyethylene (also called PEX) is becoming a new standard for indoor pipes. This stuff is resistant to extreme temperatures and stress as well as to chemical damage from acids and alkalines. The material is flexible and suitable for use in temperatures below freezing and up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, including potable water.

PEX is easy to thread through stud holes without binding against the wood like a rigid copper pipe can do. When a pipe reaches a corner, simply bend the flexible pipe through the corner studs—no joint is necessary. With PEX supply line, fewer joints save time and reduce the likelihood of a leak. PEX is less expensive than copper, and PEX joints can be made with simple quick-connect couplers.

Just What I Needed

First off- I'm a new homeowner who purchased a house that had been a rental for 20 years prior; so a fixer-upper. Second, I'm fairly novice at home improvements, but have usually figured things out fairly successfully on my own when I've rented other people's places. But since this is my house now, I wanted to do things the right way- not just a passable way based on my looking-doing solutions. This book is perfect for that. I've only had the book since Christmas- a subtle hint from my wife to get going. I noticed right away that it's intended to be there where you're working; the cover is tough, tear and water resistant with metal reinforced corners, and the pages are similarly tough.

I've only had a chance to do some of the quick fixes, but I've been doing them the right way this time, and I can see how doing it the right way means doing it so that it will last. I've fixed some of the damaged grout on the bathroom floor that had caused water damage on the ceiling below; and caulked the kids tub. Now that it's cold(ish- I mean, I live in GA), I've been fixing some of the drafty door jambs in a more permanent way than the self-adhesive stripping I'd used in the past. I'll tell you- as I tackle some of these smaller jobs, it's gotten me looking ahead to some bigger projects, and the direct, clear and concise instructions and tips make me believe that I can handle it. For that matter, some of the jobs I've been putting off because of money look a lot more affordable with a lot of the tips- like flipping boards on the deck that are in good condition.

The biggest challenges I have now are prioritizing what to do first, and keeping my wife off my back, since she knows I can do it now.

Just got a copy delivered. Impressive. I was extremely happy to see how "DIY" this book really is. Very informative from top to bottom. Illustrations and text so very simple to understand. ( unlike furniture instructions from IKEA ) This group knows how to layout information for us weekend guys. This should come with your house when you purchase a new home or even better a "fixer-upper." Great job!

Lively look at one Turkish Village's Idealogies

A hearty read with photos to back up fieldwork. Covers issues of marriage, relationships, authority, bodies, land, food, house, village, life/death, religion in relation to procreation.
Interesting, engaging and easily comprehended, it works well in a study of anthropology of one Middle Eastern way of life. Feminist issues, religious idealogies, and an intense study of one village causes the author to question along with the reader such basic tenets as Freud's motivations and the meaning/uses of words such as "seed."
A timeless vision of a rich society.
