If you can stick with it...

This book is supposed to be a first course in quantum
mechanics. Most students who are fresh to the material will
find that it "throws you into the middle of things" from the
very beginning. If the student can stick with the material,
they will find Peebles' text to be an exceptional first
course. The problem sets and discussion are both somewhat
thorough, however, a bit more discussion would certainly
benefit the reader more.

An excelent book, but a little too rigorous for some.

this book cover the basics of the unfamiliar subject of Quantum Mechanics. The book is very thorough, but it may be a little to complex for some readers. You might want to bone up on differential equations and thermal dynamics before starting. If you want to learn the subject thouhg, read this book!

Exceptionally Distinctive Textbook

An interesting exposition which emphasizes "the art of numerical estimates", while allowing for some discursiveness, if not
creativeness, throughout :
Cold Fusion Probabilities , unusually full chapter of Measurement Theory, Electromagnetic Gauge Invariance .
For whom is this textbook written? Senior undergraduates and beginning graduates.
Truly advanced methods not prerequisite for assimilation; for instance, the slick derivation (page 141) of
Hamiltonian in Polar Coordinates is easily absorbed, as is the Dirac Equation derivation ( page 406).
Algebraic methods utilized for Simple Harmonic Oscillator and Spin Angular Momentum.
Mathematical derivations are quite clean, somewhat exceptional. ( Bras, Kets, Operators, Eigenvalues,
culminating in an axiomatic summary of Quantum Mechanics presented on page 188.
Amusingly, the term Hilbert Space is avoided, also, no Path Integrals.)
I quote from our esteemed author : " What does the State Vector really mean? (page 257)," The state of a physical system is
represented by a wave function, and each measurable attribute of the system is represented by a linear self-adjoint operator in
the space of functions." (Page 114), " One can not really imagine that a point spins." (Page 198).
A few outstanding features include:
(1) Interweaving the historical discussion with modern formalism (especially the first chapter),
(2) Excellent problem sets ( see chapter two, problems 22,23,24 carrying through Simple Harmonic Oscillators, Coherent States and
Squeezed States, chapter six, problem 5 , on bound states of the Bottomonium Quark System) Do not ignore the Problem Sets.
(3) Excellent Applications of the formalism (Spin One-Half, Hyperfine Structure, Induced Transitions, Atomic and Molecular structure).
(4) The Final ,very short, Chapter (Dirac Equation) is clearly enunciated.
The text is considerably more verbose than others; reading the material is mandatory-- alongside paper and pencil to follow the
manipulation of formalism--which is made as painless as is possible.
This is a rather distinctive offering in a crowded market. Again, one size does not fit all.
While not for everyone, those who choose to peruse its contents will be amply rewarded.
A Fine contribution to the textbook literature.

Where the Wild Things Are is one of those truly rare books that can be enjoyed equally by a child and a grown-up. If you disagree, then it's been too long since you've attended a wild rumpus. Max dons his wolf suit in pursuit of some mischief and gets sent to bed without supper. Fortuitously, a forest grows in his room, allowing his wild rampage to continue unimpaired. Sendak's color illustrations (perhaps his finest) are beautiful, and each turn of the page brings the discovery of a new wonder.

The wild things--with their mismatched parts and giant eyes--manage somehow to be scary-looking without ever really being scary; at times they're downright hilarious. Sendak's defiantly run-on sentences--one of his trademarks--lend the perfect touch of stream of consciousness to the tale, which floats between the land of dreams and a child's imagination.

This Sendak classic is more fun than you've ever had in a wolf suit, and it manages to reaffirm the notion that there's no place like home.

Magical illustrations

I was introduced to this book by my librarian when I was in first grade in the mid eighties. Thirty years later I can still remember sitting with my class on the floor in front of her chair and staring at the pictures while she slowly read about Max's adventure. I wanted to jump into the book (especially when his bedroom turns into a jungle) and explore. The illustrations hold a huge amount of magic for me. So much in fact that I tracked down an old calendar just so I could frame the bedroom picture :)

I do think you should hold off on reading this book to children until you think they can understand its creativity. A few of the elements may be confusing to young children, like why Max is upset and acting out or his interactions with the beasts. Don't dismiss Max as a brat who is just throwing a fit. It's definitely a good opportunity to discuss feelings and behaviors (it's plain to see some of his behaviors are learned from his mom, maybe a message to parents hmmm?)

But still, don't take things to literally, it's all about imagination. I really don't think Maurice Sendak intended his readers to think Max a cannibal; how many times have you heard an adult say to a little kid "you're so cute I could eat you up"?

As a side note, the movie is great but not as light-hearted as the book. There are some heavy emotions and themes in there. It's geared towards a more mature audience so don't let your five year old watch that.

My Wild Thing Gives This Book 5 Stars

I got the book Where the Wild Things Are because one of my twin four year old boys reminds me so much of the little boy in the book, Max. Oftentimes he gets into mischief, more so than his brothers. When I came across this book on Amazon I automatically thought of my rotten little boy that usually just can't keep his fingers off things. I just knew he would love this book, and I was right! My strong willed, free spirited child who normally won't sit still long enough to eat his supper, sat mesmerized throughout this whole book. Each time we turned the page he was excited about the pictures and wanted to see what adventurous thing Max or his wild monster friends would do next. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone with children.

I bought this book for my daughter when she was little. I probably gave it to the library after many years. I bought it now to read to my grandchildren. I love classic books that you can pass on from generation to generation. Some times kids can get wild and very overactive. You are constantly telling them to calm down or give a time out. Reading this book to them can bring them back to reality. The pictures and illustration are wonderful. It is also a great book for children to learn how to read. The printing is large where it will get their attention. Great book for children and grown ups to enjoy.

This book saved my father's life

My father was diagnosed with what appeared to be a very small amount of cancer. We weighed the evidence, read everything we could in this book and elsewhere on what he should do, and one of the things that struck us was Dr. Walsh's detailed discussion about the nature of prostate cancer. Especially, he had a lot of evidence that cancers that seem to be not that bad are actually worse when the pathologist looks at them, and he also talked about how the biopsy, even multiple biopsies, can still miss the full extent of cancer. This is what happened with my dad. My father had surgery, and his cancer turned out to be Gleason 7. His surgeon, who performed the operation that Dr. Walsh invented, got all the cancer, and every PSA test for the last several years has been undetectable. He had no long-term side effects, and no incontinence even at the beginning. The information on ways to prevent cancer is being practiced by my brother and husband. There is a lot of good information on family history, too, which we have, on both sides of the family. I found this to be a very caring, positive, and helpful book, and I give it to friends who are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Unfortunately, there are a lot of men out there with prostate cancer, and the need for good advice is greater than ever. I would advise people looking at these reviews to use a grain of salt when reading one that seems particularly snarky. Yes, there is repetition in the book, but the authors say up front that this is because they don't expect people to read it cover to cover, but to go to the sections they need the most. I am grateful that we did not need the sections on advanced cancer, but found that to be hopeful, as well.

Essential reading for EVERY man over 40 years old!

I was just diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and this book came highly recommenced. With this type of Cancer, lifestyle and diet over the long term (>10 years) are critical ingredients in both prevention and management.

Even after diagnosis there are a LOT of options and you must be able to discuss them intelligently with your doctor. This book is the first step.

Dr. Walsh presents the essential information in both summary and detailed form. There is a lot of information on the subject, including some really harebrained nonsense, for example I just got an email telling how Prostrate Cancer is really a CIA conspiracy and you should buy this guy's "herbal remedy" which will fix everything. The only real counter to this nonsense is real knowledge based on real facts: here are the facts!

Reading the book has made me much more confident that I will "die from something else", since I am 72 that works out to approx 20 years. It is scary to formally work out your life expectancy as per Dr. Walsh's instructions, however I also found that I have already done 90% of my "do before you die" list and expect to have the time to do most of the rest.

(UPDATE) It is inevitable that ANY published material (book or whatever) is at least 2 years out of date due entirely to the necessary review and editing needed. I had a long talk with my Urologist today and there are many new options available. This book is great for being a "knowledgeable consumer", but is NO substitute of professional advice for your particular situation!

About the Author
Peter Lindbergh was born in Lissa, Germany, in 1944. His celebrated work is part of many permanent collections of Fine Arts Museums and has been presented in prestigious museums and galleries around the world, from The Victoria & Albert Museum, Londo; to Centre Pompidou; Paris, as well as in solo exhibitions at Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum f�r Gegenwart, Berlin; Bunkamura Museum of Art, Tokyo; and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow. Lindbergh lives and works between Paris, New York, and Arles.

Thierry-Maxime Loriot was born in Qu�bec City, Canada, in 1976. After working more than ten years in the fashion industry between New York, Milan, and Paris, he curated the exhibition The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier. This is one of the best books I have ever bought. It is pricey but I do not regret a single dollar. The photos in this book are amazing, they kind of make me want to give up trying to become a photographer because I will not reach the level of Peter Lindbergh. This book is a great addition to anyone's library.

This book address several important topics at a high level. What I am most impressed about this book is that the author discussed privacy issues due to data mining as early as 1998 well before the Total Information Awareness program by DARPA and the NSA spying by Snowden. The author described the pros and cons - the importance of data mining for many applications and the challenge is how can we maintain privacy. No wonder Dr. Dobbs calls this book to be inspirational and motivational. While the book may not be technically relevant 16 years later, the ideas are thought provoking and extremely futuristic.

Fascinating Book

As a lawyer I found this book fascinating. I have been a child's advocate since my postgraduate studies at the University of Cambridge over a decade ago, and have read of Dr. Thuraisingham's work on applying data mining for protecting children from inappropriate content on the Internet. This work got me very interested in the subject and I wanted to know more about data mining. Dr. Thuraisingham's book provided me with an excellent introduction to the field. I was especially interested in the chapter on security and privacy aspects of data mining. The potential consequences are very intriguing. It will be interesting to see the policies and procedures that could result from data mining, security and privacy. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all of the chapters on data mining trends. For example, the chapter on distributed data mining showed that people living in different countries could collaboratively carry out mining and extract patterns. There could be interesting legal implications. The chapter on multimedia data mining offered insights into mining newspaper articles, law reviews and pictures. The chapter on mining the web enlightened me on the potential goldmine that is out there on the Internet. It appears that while data mining tools may be essential for finding patterns, we simply cannot forget about security and privacy. I am now very motivated to read more about this topic and learn all the latest developments related to data mining and privacy.

Enlightening and Enjoyable Reading

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is very well written and easy to understand. Dr. Thuraisingham separates the book into three parts. Part 1 gives an overview of data mining technologies. The relationships between data management, data mining and data warehousing are clearly explained. Part 2 starts with an excellent overview of the process of data mining with many real-world examples. My only issue with this book is about chapter 7. While the author tries to explain many data mining techniques, perhaps she could have used a case study or a scenario to illustrate these techniques. Part 3 is the best part of this book. Dr. Thuraisingham explains mining distributed data as well as multimedia data. These are some of the current trends and I look forward to learning more about these topics in the future. I found the two chapters on web mining and security very enlightening. The author describes the advantages of data mining as well as discusses the potential problems with it. This balanced view point is rare to find in many of my other readings on data mining as of yet. I must say that while this book is clearly not for an expert in data mining, it is certainly one of the best in the field for a novice. It is indeed remarkable that someone as eminent as Dr. Thuraisingham, with several prominent research papers to her credit in secure data management, to have produced such an easy-to-understand book in data mining.

musical child psychology

Fred Rogers' songs rang in my head while I was raising my children, and I knew they provided excellent parenting advice: "I like to be told when you're going away" "Sometimes people are good ... but the very same people who are good sometimes are the very same people who are bad sometimes," and "When the baby comes to your house . . . you'll always be the oldest one." What surprised me was the musical fabulousness of his arrangements -- not humdrum, but intriguing harmonies, sparely scored, with just enough notes. As a former piano teacher, I can say that these arrangements are suitable for those with one year of piano and more fun to play than most beginner piano scores. Get them for the words, get them for the music -- you'll be glad.

Mr Rogers' songbook is brilliant!

I have been a fan of Mr Rogers' neighbourhood ever since I can remember and now my daughter is too, we both love the songs and we sang them with every show.. it was great when she started learning the piano to find a piano book that has all the songs that we both love so much.. she's 7 and has been learning for around a year and she can play some of them and is working on the rest.. we both love this book!

Terrific song book for fans and beginning pianists!

I was very pleased with this songbook. My family enjoys Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, and I was happy to find this book so I could play the songs at home. The arrangements are easy enough for a very beginning pianist to play and still sound good; yet a more accomplished improviser could easily embellish on the notes provided. The book contains quite a number of songs, so the musician and fan alike can find plenty of his or her favorites. We recommend the book!
